Taylor Sims Fairway better than Callaway Sub zero?

LOA

Recommended Posts

Currently gaming the 2016 Taylormade M2 (non tour) driver.    Cally Sub Zero 15 & 18    and Cally Apex Hybrid (iron like one)

All this talk about the Sim line being outstanding I am wondering if there is any performance gains if I upgrade.    I generally don't tinker with stuff that works to gain a few yards.  But several yards plus forgiveness is tough to pass up.    Thinking of going with the Max line.

Anyone who has played both that can provide feedback?  Thanks

Any gains you may get from switching would be from just a better fit... which it may or may not be. Now, the max line vs the sub zero isnt a fair comparison. Max is high moi and high spin, sub zero low spin but lower moi. Sub zero should be longer but max should be more forgiving- theoretically.

These two fairway lines offer about the same benefits depending on what head one decides on, max or draw styles. But the differences in the Sim to Sub Zero heads come down to adjustability. Sub Zero uses interchangable weights, fixed shaft  Sim uses adjustable shaft fixed weight. Although the Sim does allow for plus or minus 2 degrees of loft, and quite a few lie adjustments for possible better fitting parameters.  But note, price difference between models, there are differences. For myself, I chose the Sim fairway in 15*, that allows me to adjust to a 13*  to 17*  loft, and the face open or square, along with the lie adjustments, the fit works well for the various courses that I play. Versatility matters to me.

I mean its 2020 lets be honest almost every OEM especially the 3 majors make equally good products. Some better players may get fit into one or the other due to a specific aspect of their adjustability, spin rates, or cosmetics; but they all perform.

I would say that nothing in a 2020 cycle will significantly outperform anything from the 2018 cycle. IMO.

I’ve gamed a couple SZ models of Cally FW woods (Epic, Epic Flash), and the comments above I would agree with.  For me, why I like the SIM Max FW is more forgiveness, neutral bias.  I gamed the Mavrik 3W (non SZ) this summer but it was left biased and turned draws into hooks.  SIM Max is neutral biased.  They are more forgiving than the Cally SZ lines.  Not a drastic amount, but enough to warrant a spot in my bag.

Altho not an apples to apples comparison as I had the 4wd SZ with a Atmos Black 7x and currently have the Ti Sim with the Ltd, so 2.5* difference, but it is much more than that.  The 4wd was just flying high and landing soft, but short.  The Ti is flying almost as high, but 25+ yards more carry and then roll out from there.  I also like the ability to open the face up as it is primarily used off the tee.  I completely looked the other way from the SZ's and would have rather put my E8 Beta 4wd or Tightlies Tour in play before it.

I actually put my epic flash SZ 5w against a SIM TI 5w. I used the exact same set up that I currently have. A stock Tensi Blue. The Sim felt like butter and was very forgiving however it didn’t not beat my Epic. Number for me were almost exactly the same. Same spin, ball and club head speed. Even the same amount of roll. To me it just was worth the extra cost for now.

Callaway makes the best fairway imo.  They have been the longest off tee for me and longest/easiest to hit off deck with their shallow face.  Past model Cally’s are even better than SIM.  TM/Cobra have the longest/best drivers tho.

If you are talking fairways you better take a look at Tour Edge Exotics for best fairways. I have three different models I have bought over the years and I'll go as far to say my very first model I bought the XCG-V will still stack up with the newest models. It comes down to profile with them because the performance is in every model.  I have been playing the XCG7 fairways since they came out because I like the lower profile head.

The SZ fairways are monsters.  Super long - easy to elevate off the deck yet still cannons off the tee.  To my eye, I like how they look like they melt into the ground vs SIM sitting up higher - but just my preference

You need to try it out, everyone will have different opinions. In my opinion they both make great fairway woods. it is all about what one fits your eye and swing.

Agreed I would try both to see what suits you best.  SIM fairways performed better for me than the new Mavrik SZ woods, but the Mavrik SZ driver works better than the SIM.

I have never liked a Callaway Driver, but have always loved a Callaway fairway wood.  Funny how that works out.

I tested both out at a fitting yesterday.  The SIM (not max) 3 wood was awesome for me.  The Mavrik was good, but didn't blow me away.  The winner was actually a Tour Edge EXS Pro.  It performed on par with the SIM but was cheaper.

For me, the SIM, Mavrik Sub Zero, and EXS Pro were all solid choices though.  Hot off the face and kept backspin down - which I tend to have too much of.  Came down to price and the more compact head of the EXS Pro for me.

I ended up with the Sim fairway 3 wood for the adjustability, and have the Tour Edge EXS Pro driver and 5 wood, Very satisfied with all these clubs for the bag. All perform well .

I found the regular SIM driver (not MAX) and the fairway much better on the LM than on the course.  I had the 3 and 5 wood, and quickly went back to a RBZ Tour 3W (and now the TEE EXS Pro) and I am getting a regular EF (again) as my 5W.  Better overall playability.

Of course everyone is different.

I did a side by test just recently. Bought sub zero mavriks from CPO and bought a SIM from 3 balls. SIM won easily. Mavrik was shorter than my old 915fd. SIM is just a solid line.

I own a sim max and Mavrik. Mavrik is bent flat and open.

sim max is straighter but lower launch, spin, height. Mavrik is not crooked by any means and gives me a much higher ball flight (110’ vs 80’) and spin (3300 rpm vs 2650), which is what I want from my 3 wood. Mavrik carries 5-7 yards longer as well.

I tested the the sim and it was 5 yards longer then the Mavrik, but had launch and spin similar to my driver. I’m not slow (110mph with driver) but don’t see how many could fit into a sim if they want to use it into par 5’s. Off the tee it is fantastic as the titanium face is going to make it faster and spin less.
