What happened to Hunter Mahan?

I know what  you're saying but, even with what you read, I still say to myself, I really don't know the complete story one way or another.

None of us know the complete story and likely never will.  But the optics will always be "wealthy golfer and trophy wife take life insurance payout from grieving children" because most people will never look beyond the headline.

These aren't the greatest examples either.  There are few good "golf is hard" ones but many of them had specific, identifiable events:

O'Hair - Sean Foley

Haas - Tragic car accident

Walker - Lyme Disease

Bradley - anchored putting ban

Moore - I'd hardly say he's fallen off the map or anything so not sure why he's on here

O'Hair's best golf was with Foley.  He fell apart afterwards.

"Golf is hard" can't be the answer, since there are dozens and dozens of guys still thriving on the Tour.

Something obviously went wrong with the guys you listed. They either had a swing failure they weren't able to fix or they had a failure of the mind or motivation or something else.

For example, I think some guys (like perhaps Jason Dufner) reach a certain point of success and money and don't care to put in the work it takes to remain elite anymore.

That isn't just because golf is hard. It's because they basically chose not to be a top 100 player in the world anymore. It takes hours in the short game area, for example, that you have to be willing to put in every week.

Everything you just said means that golf (especially at the highest level) is incredibly difficult....i.e. golf is hard.

If 1/3 of the things alleged in the suit are indeed true it puts the Mahan's in a very bad light.  And even if the law is on their side it's just got this really shady vibe to it, all the things they were doing.  No wonder he plays bad golf if he's mind is preoccupied with greed.

What Kandi and her mother did was sleazy and greedy.  Hunter needs to stand up for what is right and I don't think he seized the opportunity.  Hunter essentially sold his soul by not intervening with what was done to the the life insurance policy.

At best, Hunter wasn't actively involved in the scheme but was complicit.  Still very sleazy and greedy.

The Mahan / Enloe situation is terribly sad regardless of who is right or wrong.  But it's an all too common situation when money is involved.  The optics of someone with well over $30 million in career earnings taking the life insurance payout of a deceased sister-(in-law) is something that will follow the Mahan's for the rest of their lives.

Agreed. I'm sure they have their side of the story, I assume it involves saving the money so his daughters can eventually have it. But given the Mahans are already multi-millionaires it just doesn't have a good look.

"In the suit, Enloe details how in 2012 he bought a life-insurance policy for Katie that carried a death benefit of $500,000. Enloe says in the suit that “while Katie was incapacitated, heavily medicated and in hospice,” Mahan and Breaux “exerted undue influence” on Katie that resulted in a change to the beneficiary designation to Mahan. Enloe claims that he has a written confirmation of the electronic change from the insurance policy that was dated July 2, 2018 – one day before Katie died.

Enloe alleges that Mahan and Breaux falsely told Katie, “in her weakened and medicated state,” that her two daughters would lose their private-school scholarships if Enloe remained the beneficiary. After the designation change, Mahan possesses the death benefits – intended to be used for care of Enloe’s two daughters and other household expenses – and Enloe has no control over how the funds are allocated.

Enloe also alleges that, “under the premise they would help remove Katie’s clothing and accessories to assist in his grieving,” Mahan and Breaux took without his permission a “great deal of valuable jewelry that once belonged to Katie,” items that included a $30,000 engagement ring and $20,000 Rolex watch."

Yeah good call, I was specifically going to mention the Jimmy Walker Lyme Disease bit, that will REALLY kick your butt.

Shot +1 in the first round at the Safeway. Better or equal than a lot of solid players and with a cut projected at -2 he could make it to the weekend.

the popular take on hunter is that his results tailed off when he had his kids, maybe officially a fork stuck in him in 2015.  A personal take, i witnessed mahan hitting balls right after his barclays win in 2014. to this day, that was the best display of ball striking i have ever seen, astonishing.  they say moe norman was machine like.  mahan was hitting it better than machine like lol.  perhaps he spent all his energies working with foley and culminating in that 2014 victory.

My memory of Mahan is getting one of the worst breaks in modern major history at Bethpage back the year Glover won. I think it was 17 where he was tied for the lead, hit an iron right at the flag, had it hit the flag and bounce like 20 yards back off the green, and he didn't get up and down....was like a 2 shot swing.

Poor guy...Others may not like his swing but i remember when he was in his prime he was considered one of the better drivers of the ball.

He came really close to being a major champion. I always wonder how guys lives might have been different if one bounce goes the other way

I remember watching Hunter and Ricky Barnes compete in the US Amateur at Oakland Hills. What a show. Always seemed like an unassuming, decent guy to me. A lot of guys succumb to injuries. Not sure if that is Hunter’s problem, though.

Hope he returns to prime form soon.

we don't know the details, but nothing about that passes any kind of smell test, imo ...

The curse is the multi million dollar house he built. Then he fell on hard times and sold that cursed house to Jordan Spieth. Clearly the house is the career killer....

I always liked his golf swing. It looks so simple and rotational to me.

I remember an interview with him where he said he was trying to carry his driver like 10 yards farther because he was on the edge of what all of the carries on Tour were becoming. Many a golf career has been destroyed by trying to hit it a club farther. You try and change something, it doesn't work, and the old feel doesn't work anymore either, and now you're just searching.

We could ask the same question about a lot of guys.

Sean O'Hair

Bill Haas

Jimmy Walker

Keegan Bradley

Jason Dufner

Nick Watney

Ryan Moore

Camilo Villegas

I think the answer is...golf is hard.

Sean O'Hair - Foley

Bill Haas - Vision issues and then was in a tragic car accident

Jimmy Walker - Lyme disease

Keegan Bradley - Anchor ban

Jason Dufner - He's 43. He became a name later in his career and is aging.

Nick Watney - Injuries

Ryan Moore - Lost weight, does he belong here though?

Camilo Villegas - Not sure on this one

The guys on the tour and keeping their spot, work really hard to stay there or are supremely gifted with amazing talent.   Look at the college kids and Korn Ferry junior tour, etc etc.   There are 50 to 100 really good guys fighting as hard as they can for your spot on the tour.   Every day practicing, going to the gym, talking to sponsors, paying your coach.
