Winning the Fedex Cup?

Recommended Posts

If you win the Tour Championship does that now mean that you automatically win the Fedex Cup series?  I know a couple years ago one player could win the TC while another player could win the FC.  Dustin Johnson had a first and a second in the two prior playoff events. Say he finished second again today. If the player that was rated 30th won today would he win the Fedex Cup and beat out DJ?   I also heard a couple players skipped the second tournament entirely but qualified for the Tour Championship.  What if they won today?

There may be apes running your town when you wake up - look for Nova! ?   https://www.pgatour.com/fedexcup/fedexcup-overview.html

Schauffele probably doesn't shoot his same number, not does anyone else, if they all start at zero.  Different mindset, different approach.   A variation of the butterfly effect.     No way

I'm assuming that he didnt beat Johnson by 5 shots over the 4 rounds? Over those 4 rounds of the Tour Championship the best player by far, 5 strokes, didnt get the win

There isn't technically 2 separate tournaments anymore, did you not notice when they started round 1 that DJ was already on -10?

He was leading so he was -10 and then everyone behind started further back -8, -7 etc etc

It was meant to stop the confusion...

To me the stroke handicap system for the Tour Championship is wrong.  Playing straight up DJ lost by 4 strokes to Schauffele.  I think a better system would be to take the three tournaments of the Fedex Playoff and make it total score. Then have a cut at end of the first tournament.  Or they could just take the top 30 Fedex points players for the year and have no cut throughout the series.  More incentive to play at a consistent high level. (Somewhat like the Tour de France bike race - they keep all the prior times of each leg and then add the total at the end to determine the winner).  Give a check and trophy for each tournament but a big check for the total low score.

If they would have done an aggregate score the end result would have been the same as DJ would have had an even bigger lead going into the tour championship.  They simply normalize the results from the prior events to something that is reasonable. Also, this is the first year that the leader going into the tour championship has won the fedex cup. All prior years someone else has overcome the deficit the points leader was provided going into the event.

Also with your proposal of an aggregate score, who would win each  week? The person with the lowest running total or lowest score for that week? You could in theory have someone win the fedex cup without having won 1 playoff event. Challenges and complexities abound for any option...

HE doesn't get the money, but he did get the world ranking points that go with first place.

No way of knowing who would have won a non staggered start.

You beat me to the punch, I was going to post something along the same lines.  DJ starting with a 2 shot lead is going to change the way he approaches holes.  He earned the ability to play more conservative early on where other guys that were a few strokes behind had to be more aggressive to make up ground.  Either way it worked out.  The best player this season won the TC and the FedEx Cup.  Had Schauffele won could we really have said that?

How would Schauffele of handled the pressure of leading the tournament? Would DJ of played as conservative if down a few shots?

That's the folly of trying to take a single event and make it a culmination of season long performance.  DJ won the TC as it was constructed but he did not have the lowest 72 hole score in the event (without the -10 headstart).

I understand why it is done (to keep from having a FedEx cup champ and different TC and prevent a mathematical issue where the FedEx Cup is won prior to the TC) but it still is unsatisfying how it is accomplished.

I agree that DJ was the best golfer this season.  But Schauffele had the lowest score at the TC.

Match play would be better, but not without other "match play problems."

Last four years he has t2, 2, t7 and a win at east lake. History proves you wrong. I am looking at the facts and you are just assuming

Reading this, was the original post just more of a rant?  LOL, seems like you know how it works, so may have been. It's always been pretty contrived and seems to drive the golf agenda more than it should (PGA moving, reach around season, golf must give way to football, etc.).  There's been no overall big "win" for the sport by putting the game on Finchem's fiscal year approach to the season.  I still say junk it, but it won't happen.

If the tour did this DJ would have an even bigger lead, he was -34 heading into East Lake through the previous events. His closest competitor would have been Webb at -21, with a few other players in the low teens. No one would have stood a chance. Rham would have been -8 entering the week still. McIlroy would have been at -1.

xander had the lowest score during the last part ("last round") of the fedex cup race, as i see it ... dj had the lowest score for the entire fedex cup race ... not a clean perspective, granted ...

Some great play on an average layout well set up. Without Coca Cola the tournament wouldn't go anywhere near East Lake.

Credit to DJ. He is in amazing form.

But...in our clubhouse tonight the discussion was the prize money. Non of those round the table are remotely socialist but $15m is obscene considering the global economy is tanking.

I assume you were never on a debate team in HS, and pray you aren't a lawyer ?

Or maybe you should go down to AGNC with your persuasive logic and convince them to give Norman a green jacket!

That is how you pay for your company name being mentioned every 30 seconds in every PGA Tour golf broadcast.

The OP from our resident Electrical Engineer and Part-Time Photographer was a justified rant.

This new system is nothing more than hype.   Who the heck wants to make TV Golf "difficult to follow" with a set of strokes and rules?

I got 10 bucks DJ couldn't tells us how it works.   But, then again, DJ can afford to hire a team to think for him.

Congrats to the PGA.
