JT Wins Player of the Year - How Bogus....

Recommended Posts

Per CBS Sports:

Justin Thomas is your Player of the Year. Well, one of them anyway. On Tuesday, Thomas was named the PGA Player of the Year ahead of Jon Rahm. It's the second time Thomas has won this award, which is not voted on but rather tallied up using a system that includes points for wins, money list position and scoring average.

Dustin Johnson, who matched Thomas with three PGA Tour wins last season, finished fifth.

  1. Justin Thomas -- 66 points
  2. Jon Rahm -- 56
  3. Collin Morikawa -- 54
  4. Webb Simpson -- 52
  5. Dustin Johnson -- 42

Johnson finished a surprising fifth here after going T2 at the PGA Championship and winning two of the last three events of the season.

I read this on yahoo. It's a point system so it's weird anyways. Thomas got 20 points in the system for being, I guess the regular season money list is worth a lot. 16 points for being 3rd for scoring average. They gave the winning points for last weekend to Xander because he had the lowest score for 72 holes, totally bunk, but ok.

DJ win win the players vote anyways

The formula that the PGA of America uses gives players points for PGA Tour wins (10 for each, 30 for a major), where they finished on the money list and where they ranked in the overall scoring (first place gets you 20, second gets 18, third 16, etc.). Interestingly, the PGA of America did not credit Johnson for his Tour Championship title (instead giving the 10 points to Xander Schauffele, who shot the lowest score for four rounds at East Lake but finished tied for second when accounting for the pre-tournament stroke adjustment). Even if you added another 10 points to DJ’s overall total, he still wouldn’t have passed Thomas for the title.

I like JT and he had a very good year, but DJ will rightfully get the players' vote.

FWIW, there were about 190 players total competing in JT's 3 wins, while ~280 competed in DJ's 2 wins. JT had 10 top 10s in 18 events while DJ had 7 in 14 events.

Under the current format, there is no longer official $ for the Tour Championship...Counting the Fed Ex $, DJ is about $9M ahead of JT for the season and far outplayed JT in the only major and 3 playoff events.

When there was separate Tour Championship event (prior to the handicap system the past few years), the tournament purse did count towards official  season and career winnings, but the Fed Ex bonus $ didn't.

I believe there were a few reasons for this:

1. The top prize was originally paid out over a number of years.

2. Career Earnings list could get very skewed...this is used for Champions Tour eligibility as well as a one time regular tour exemption for top 50 & 25.
