I rolled the dice on a $160 Yupiteru Atlas GST-5W Japanese Launch Monitor - Mini Review

The Launch Monitor is the YUPITERU Atlas Golf Swing Trainer GST-5 W. I bought it a few weeks ago for $160 on Amazon.

 

I made a video here documenting my testing. For the test I took it out onto a golf course and used my range finder to determine how far the ball actually went and compared with the readings from the Atlas.  My testing was not the most scientific, but the results were solid.  Definitely usable. 

 

The device is in Japanese except for the numbers. I am unable to read Japanese, but it works fine. You power it on, set it behind the ball a few feet pointing at the target, and swing. You can select which club you're hitting - which is important. You cannot specify what loft your club is though.

 

It gives results in meters per second, which I have to convert into mph to be usable for my purposes. It gives club head speed, ball speed, yardage. It gives smash factor which is a ratio between club and ball speed. The yardage appears to be carry distance.

 

I also had a chance last week to compare with a friend's Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor and the Atlas was solid, within 5%.

 

It is quite reliable and rarely misfires. It also works just swinging a club with no ball for clubhead speed - which is nice if you're doing speed stick training.  I found if I prop it up a few inches off the grass it is very reliable.  It is made of plastic, but seems fairly well made.  It is quite small overall, a bit smaller than my range finder.

 

Overall I really like it. I use it with speed stick training to measure my progress and it has been awesome. I use it to learn exactly what my carry numbers are and that has helped me make smarter club choice decisions. For $160 I think it is worthwhile.

Nice review. I have a GST-5GL on the way, very good to hear the numbers are very close. Keen to use it for gapping and dialing in carry distances.

 

I've read that in previous models there is a way to change the units to read in mph rather than m/s - pressing the mode button until the black circle appears in the bottom right. Might not be applicable to newer versions but worth a shot.

I recently purchased the Yupiteru GST-7 for my stack system. At 190 Canadian, it has been so good for speed training. I was using the SSR and you always wonder how accurate each swing is. Now I can track down to the decimal (m/s). The stack app does the math for you. For 130 less than PRGR, I think it’s the best deal you can get.
