I’m with you. For some reason many like watching the pros “struggle like us”. WHY? I would not sit on the couch and watch my buddies hack it around so why watch the best in the world do so?
It would be like putting the occasional spike strip on a nascar track.

Are they "struggling" or is it this is a tough course made really tough with wind?  If they can't go to their usual bomb and gouge game, then I guess it is Plan B, show us some golf shots.

agree ... not shooting 7 under every round does not a 'struggle' make ...

One thing I don't like about Morikawa is that he takes too long pre-shot. We have 3 groups only thru 13. I don't see how they finish today.

Winged Foot is fine in my opinion. Perfect ”US Open setup”. They lose my interest when they do the manufactured hard by baking out the course.

I volunteer at Riviera, and what is mind-blowing to watch is their short games and recovery shots.

I have friends who can hit 300 yard bombs and 220 yard 5 irons.   Plenty of good athletes, especially those who played baseball or hockey, can smoke the ball.

But none can recover with such ease when they miss.

It's more fun to watch these guys scramble, rather than some putting contest.

Same reason the NBA is worse with all the three point shooting.  It doesn't show off their athleticism and talent. Except for Curry ?

Despite his unpopularity, props to Reed, he played a fine round.

Just need rule officials following him like a hawk over the weekend to make sure he doesn't cheat. It just feels like he had to have cheated to play this well today.

A lot harder to see the ball when it's deep down in the rough on these cameras.

Well, better watch out for him getting the gallery to move large boulders that are in his line of play. Wait, there are no galleries at WF. No large boulders either. Someone with respect for the rules of golf wouldn’t have thought to even ask.

agree, WF is perfect. feel like we have 3 options.

- rotate the US Open between two or three perfect courses

- keep a larger number of courses in the rotation and bake it out

- keep a larger number of courses in the rotation and accept that 80% of them will get lit up like Christmas trees

yep ... and i'm not sure why people mock reed's physique ... but it's america, i guess ... no reason to not take a shot at another person's physical appearance ... he's not trim, but he's more stocky than anything ...

To be clear, I'm not mocking Bryson's physique either, I just don't understand why people think the "Hulk" is under that golf shirt...Bryson looks a lot more like Reed under there than the Hulk (and yes, I know the Hulk is a fictional character, but you get the point).

Two days in, and unless NBC steps things up on the weekend it’s probably safe to say their coverage is a step backwards from what Fox delivered the last couple of years. The pictures have been OK though there were a few instances where an announcer was talking about something that never got shown, but that happens in most telecasts. The things that jumped out at me as deficient were the graphics - you need to show the player/score when you first show a player on a green, and then show it again after he putts out. NBC consistently dropped the ball on this, along with very scarce full-field leaderboards, if there were even any. But the bigger problem was the on-air talent.  It’s telling when your lead anchor analyst pair are 3rd in the pecking order of preference, but that’s where I would place Hicks and Azinger, behind both Tirico/Leonard and Gannon/Faldo. But the others were hit and miss too. I didn’t even know that Peter Jacobsen was still with NBC, but like much of the NBC crew he is past his prime. The presentation seems tired too.  Gil Hanse did the renos at WF and he has TV experience with Fox, so why not bring him in to discuss the course? Maybe they are saving all their good stuff for the weekend, I don’t know. I sure hope so.

Pebble Beach

Oakmont

Shinnecock Hills

Winged Foot

Pinehurst #2

Bethpage Black

6 course rota and call it good.  Maybe throw in Merion.  Definitely remove Torrey Pines and some of the others.

I agree with dumping Torrey. Never understood the USGA’s infatuation with it. Pebble is borderline too easy for these guys now but the presentation is lovely. I could do without Bethpage too, 2 NYC area courses are enough. If you want another west coast course for TV there are plenty of good ones to choose.  Olympic Club, Riviera, many others.  I would like to see some Midwest or Texas area courses considered too.

Root for him all you want. Saying he has a chance to win on a track like this is delusional though. This is not Tiger 2008 (though NBC just took the time to replay clips of that for some reason, which makes me wish Fox had kept the rights).

Tiger has a chance to win anytime he tees it up.  Any of the top 50+ players in the world golf rankings do.  You may be delusional if you think otherwise...

The others in the top 50 don’t require hours of physiotherapist attention and a handful of pills before they can even set foot on the practice tee each day. Even with all that, Woods right now is at best a ceremonial golfer pretty much anywhere except Augusta, because of the lack of rough and his intimate knowledge of the place.

JD, we are on the same page. You’ve been out here even longer than I, back to 2007.

Eveything you just said has been true for many years. Remember when TW had the yips, “chip yips”, every “yip” known to man, couldn’t keep up distance wise, broken back, on drugs, and mentally toast?

Here is my take on being realistic....

If TW is healthy enough and driven enough to practice and play the same regiment he did in 2018,19 again, he can beat anybody at the Masters or Open.

You could hear it even from the announcers today, they're talking about TW as if it's a foregone conclusion he doesn't have it anymore, even going as far as pointing out his loss of ball speed.
