Zack Johnson steals it--(Payne Stewart award)

Zach Johnson would a crazy dark horse winner! He would hold 3 of 4 majors. That would be bonkers.

Now that you mention it, it might be the story line I’m rooting for.

he would be the most unlikely golfer in the hunt for the grand slam EVER

Good lord.  But I understand it.  That’s when you just no longer care after caring too much.  You have to learn not to care that much .

This US Open is going to have a big asterisk if Wolff wins - dude has never played a major with a crowd and hasn't even really looked into the history of the US Open.  I don't think you can truly understand the weight of winning a major unless you're doing it in front of those crowds, hearing roars as others make a move and need to respond.

Glad golf is back, but majors aren't deserving of the same place on the mantle until fans are back.

No, there won't be an asterisk. Whoever wins, won, plain and simple.

Greens are looking pretty slick today. Think this might be the blood-bath people have been waiting for.

Weather is coolest today. High only 66 with some clouds.

Watching rerun of Seniors on golfchannel at Pebble and US Open on peacock at Winged Foot while posting on golwrx. Good times.

USGA did right at Winged Foot, it's going to be a grind if a little breeze kicks up. The course looks gorgeous and treacherous.

I actually like watching golf with no fans. It's a different type of pressure for these guys.

They really need to toss Reed, not just from the US Open but from the Tour.  He's been flat out caught cheating at least twice already, which means he's doing it quite regularly.

Seve Ballesteros did it in the Ryder Cup. Ask Paul Azinger.

He’s not injured there. It wasn’t an unfair green like at Shinnecock. Just Danny being dumb.

"Sorry, guys.  Cheating is allowed now.  Because some guys did it years ago, it's cool now, even if you're clearly seen on video improving your lie."

One of the big distinctions between golf and other sports is that while cheating is implied/expected in other sports ("If you're not cheating, you're not trying"), golf is a game where players call penalties on themselves.  I, for one, appreciate and respect that aspect of the game, and would like to see it remain a big part of it.

The difference between a moral man and a man of honor is that the latter regrets a discreditable act, even when it has worked and he has not been caught.

Only one guy at -1 or better of the 20 or do guys out there now. They also said #17 is playing over 520 yards today. Early indications for scoring aren't good.

Easy......bushes. Most of the courses in Europe have bushes, thick bushes, you're dead in there

I get it...but these types of bushes are totally out of character on a Winged Foot-type course, unless they are used on the outer edges of the course...but that is OB already.

More bunkers with deeply-furrowed sand would work too, come to think of it.

I don't love them either, but they definitely help.....

Well, at least bushes like this would identify just who (and who doesn't) have an elite punch-out game : )

Bushes won't work because the members would have to deal with them. Guys that can hit it longer and are stronger deserve to keep their advantage. The onus is on others to either get longer and stronger (like Bryson did) and/or focus on other elements to try and make up the difference.

One thing im wondering about WF is how much wider green openings look on a log the par 4s and 5s from previous years. Seems like that makes it easier for anyone playing out of the rough to roll it on there. Iirc the previous setup greens were much narrower in front and with bunkers pinching some entrances even further. I prefer the new setup better, especially for the times I've played there. The old rough to front bunker routine was getting tiring. Rolling one up on the proper line is more interesting and gives a chance to show more skill....like Bryson did on 17.
