I can't help but think that this course setup is perfectly suited for a Webb Simpson victory.

Beat me to it.  I just heard his presser and he’s ready.  I mean you could see it.  I picked Fleetwood to win.  But Webb is my 2nd pick now.

I've been saying this for years. If you gave golfers the choice of a game at Winged Foot or the local suburban club 99% would choose Winged Foot. If after the game, they then get to choose a membership at Winged Foot or the local suburban club 99% would say not Winged Foot.

I wonder if the East course is quite a bit less challenging?  That's a nice thing for members.  I know that at Olympic Club, it's great to have the Lake course (which has hosted all those Opens) as well as the "easier" Ocean course.  Walking off the Lake course, it's common to feel tired and a bit beat-up.  Walking off the Ocean course, the usual sentiment is:  Let's play again!

Fortunate to have played it once.  In the summer in dry conditions.

I didn't remember it being crazy from tee to green.  Of course, I was not playing the course from 7500 yards, and I wasn't playing the course with that kind of rough.

What I do remember is the green complexes.  Insane and beautiful.  Just about every single green is distinctive and memorable.  If you miss it in the wrong place, you are absolutely dead.   There is plenty of undulation on the green complexes.  I was listening to a show describing them as relatively flat.  Certainly not how I remember them.

Same.  I think what may be meant by 'not having to change the course to host a major' for WF basically means grow rough longer + make greens a bit faster.  I think its a very fair course from tee to green, even for mid handicappers.

Pebble Beach never reached the 70's last year.  It barely reached the 60's.  Here is a link to show the high temperatures for each day last year.

east course is generally considered a "lighter touch", but mostly because it's shorter. its quite similar otherwise, and it actually has some forced carries that are more severe than anything on the west.

Yes it is cooler than average, at least for US Open conditions, but I believe the golfers will just love the weather.

Possibly. But temperament is going to factor big, I would think. DJ seems the type to not get flustered by anything too much. Important if it’s a given that it’s going to be a constant struggle with a lot of bogeys no matter what you do.

I'm the opposite. It'd be Winged Foot for both. Most of the  "best" and most satisfying rounds I've played have been 85-87 range on really difficult courses. I played way better Golf in those rounds than almost all of the rounds I've ever had in the 70's at other not so demanding places. I can't think of a better way to get better than playing a challenging course most of the time. I'd also feel much better about whatever number I'm playing off it was the result of playing a place like Winged Foot vs your typical local course

Not BS. It’s a mindset.   Most people hate playing golf in the rain.  For whatever reason I love it.  I like “ grey “ days. I can see better.  I smile on tournament days whne it’s rainy. Why ?  My score isn’t going to change. But everybody else is pouting and beating themselves griping about the rain.    He’s saying that.  He’s loving the difficulty knowing he doesn’t have to go low.  All he has to do is survive.  Let everybody else kill themselves and then try to be out front on Sunday.   In other words he loves the difficulty.  Harder the better.

I'm very similar. Probably why I'd prefer to play the toughest course possible (within reason length wise). I'm by no means a great or even good golfer at 10, but in difficult weather or tough course, I'm rarely gonna be worse than my regular bad round. I may not be able to have a good day by my normal standards, but my anti-cap ceiling doesn't change much if at all. Where as most other's will play significantly worse than they ever do in normal conditions or on a normal course. I love when the wind kicks up in my normal little money game at home. Everyone bitches and moans about it. I enjoy trying to figure it out. To me, difficult conditions takes pressure off and helps me let go of expectations.

I also see way better on gray days vs high blue sky. Been that way since baseball days at the plate and in the field (outfielder). much more contrast against that gray backdrop. I can't see a golf ball past about 200yds on a bright sunny day.
