How the heck do you keep shoes with kilties tight/snug?

Recommended Posts

I've got an old pair of Reeboks similar to the ones in this eBay listing that I bought used, and painstakingly (no, not really...just a ton of Bickmore and Sno Seal) restored them for use.  I laced up the kilties using the instructions found here, but had some trouble in the golf outing today:  Namely, I couldn't keep them snug on my feet!  Not being securely attached to my shoes meant that I felt a little unsteady and unbalanced on some of the shots, and that undoubtedly cost me a few shots.  The shoes fit really well side to side and front to back, but without being able to properly snug the top, my feet seem to move up and down inside the shoes.

So, with that, what the heck am I doing wrong here?  Is there another better method of lacing up kilties?

We never did anything fancy back when I wore those kind of shoes.  Just laced them up regular with the final bow on top of the flap. Think the instructions you followed are if you want to add the kiltie flap.  Since old golf shoes had it built in, special lacing techniques were not required.

Wow - how old are those shoes?  I haven't seen kilties in ages.  Is the leather still in good shape?

I think they date from the late 80's or early 90's.  The leather was a little old and dirty, but like I said, a little conditioning and working, and they're like new!  They cleaned up SUPER nicely with a full Bickmore regimen, followed by white shoe polish and beeswax.  The shoes themselves were $5 or so, then I had to get new laces, new cleats, and new insoles.   I'll get some pics up of my actual shoes sometime today.

That's where I was a little confused - when I bought the shoes, they were laced up and a little shabby looking.  Without thinking, I removed the old laces and didn't take note as to how they were laced originally.  But, they were laced in such a way that the kilty (kiltie?) itself actually folded down overtop of the bow/knot that you'd tie.

That old did they come with metal spikes? If so, are you able to replace them with soft spikes?

Yeah!  I had to turn to Ebay to find some soft spikes with metal threads - nobody in town carried 'em, even the specialty golf retailers.  Wound up with some Champ Zarmas

Must be special shoes, myself I would buy a pair of new shoes.

They were $5, and I figured I'd replace the insoles and cleats on a new pair of shoes anyway, so I thought "what the heck" and went with the weird old shoes.

They retained Mossimo for design and marketing

This is the Peter Millar info on the sale

“Our intent is to let Moss express his creative genius for design, branding and marketing while we build a solid foundation for the business with our back-end expertise,” said Mahoney.

Just lace them under the kilties, and let the kilties flap over the laces.  The whole point of the kilties is that it covers your laces so you don't get the laces caught on anything.  I used to wear them when I first started playing back in the 80's.

I did that.  Laced it up in the way that we always called "skater style," where the laces go down from the top of the shoe through the eyelets, which means you can tuck the bow inside the tongue of the shoe (or in my case, inside the flap of the kilties).

You don't.  You get down off a goose...oh, wait, different joke.  But same general idea.
