Battle of the All Time Greatest Irons

So I am just wondering what irons should be included in this battle. Plan is to try and actually find these clubs also and test them out. What do you think? Not looking for niche personal preferences or obscure Japanese forged heads, but big major huge blockbuster selling irons that everyone owned or had friends who owned. Two off the top of my head;

Ping Eye 2

Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot

What else you think?

I have those 2 sets bagged up and ready for play right now. I would also add the Titleist 962 in the mix.

As you already said: Ping Eye 2- First widely played cast, perimeter weighted irons

Tommy Armour 845-First widely played cavity back irons in a traditional shape.

And I suggest:

Hogan Apex or Wilson Staff blades ( pretty much any version from the mid '70s to late '80s)- Typifies what everybody played before

Pings and the Tommy Armours changed the landscape.

Callaway X12s or the S2H2 -Irons- The start of the oversized iron, thick topline, wide sole revolution.

PXG 0311 (first generation) or Taylor Made P790 (first generation)- The start of the "Player's Distance" category.

Good list.  I'd add in the Spalding Executives.  Don't think the PXGs for P790s have reached blockbuster status yet but who knows what we will think in 20 years looking back on this.

Probably the best method would be the most popular irons by brand... you’ll have some weird technology bumps...

ping eye 2 and the 845 are clear winners... I’ve already voted for the Adams cmbs, but they are still in my bag... probably not the top sellers, but they were very will regarded...

callaway s2h2 is a good pick. I’m sure there are some other options.

I’ll donate a set of Taylor made burner oversize but I don’t think they are the top tm iron. Maybe rac?

titliest maybe the original ap2?

mizuno is going to be a fight regardless which set you pick.

cobra irons are tough... they seem to be consistent but never really mold breaking. King cobra irons maybe?

Lot of choices

ping cast eye series and the multitude of copiers

then there were the blades and pick one to represent them

Then there were the forged cavities like hogans edge or Ram lasers.

tie it all together with th shafts in most every one.  Dg s300 or x100.

Ping I5 are on the modern mount Rushmore.  Not up there with eye2 but since 2000 they'd be one of the top 2-3 sets

All the ones I would have picked, Eye2, 845s, and DCI have already been mentioned.

If you go old school Wilson FG17 or some Dynapower variant.

The original King Cobra Oversize irons were all-timers.

The original jacked lofts and it seemed that everyone over 50 yoa had a set.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

They were the best selling irons in 1994-1995.  I had the driving iron as well and that thing was a cannon.
