Miura TC-201 vs Titleist T100

Apologies for introducing a non-Japanese iron here but I was hoping that some of you might have played or tested both, the Miura TC-201 and the Titleist T100 or T100S. My decision is kind of between those two but I don't have an opportunity to currently hit them side-by-side.

I own the Titleist T100 and just hit a demo TC-102 albeit with a different shaft. 7 irons side by side similar distance. The Miura felt a bit more “dense” and beefy. The blade lengths are very similar. The Miura a bit more angular compared to the T100. 
hit a couple toe shots with the TC-102’s and was surprised they held their line and didn’t lose too much distance. I was also very impressed with the turf interaction as it digs a bit less than the T100. The sole is a touch wider with the Miura but not by much. I have turf issues with wide sole GI irons. Actually hit players irons much cleaner. The club got into and out of the turf very well with the Miura.

The TC-201 looks fantastic.  I imagine they are a bit more demanding - Less Forgiving than what I currently play so without hitting them I need to slow myself 

down before buying .

Never hit the T100's, but have hit AP2, and recently switched from Mizuno MP20's to try the TC201's.  man they are the softest irons I have ever felt.  I like the leading edge grind for turf interaction.  Coming from MP25 and MP20 Mizzies, these felt considerably softer and don't dig in softer turf conditions.  I fluctuate from a +1 to a 2 handicap, and 7-PW are best I have ever hit, when you get into 6-3 there is a little less offset to my prior sets so just took a little getting use to as I hung a couple right that just wouldn't turn over;. I would not hesitate to get the TC201's, you would love them.  I think a scratch to a 7/8 handicap could rock them easy.

I'm tempted to get 5-PW heads and build a set.  Where is everyone sourcing these or the MG version ?

I have owned the t100, t100s, currently play the Miura tc201. 
 

the t100 line are great clubs.  They are soft.  They are forged so they bend easy if you need to adjust.  They are forgiving(for a players club”. Amd have mucho technology inside that backside.  (Weighing, materials, titleist special sauce”.  
 

The jacked lofts of the t100s make the club seem hotter.  Comparing the t100 and tc201s…they are comparable in distance.  
 

the 201s are old school.  Perimeter weighted forged Japanese crafted craftsmanship.  There is no magic inside other than the elements of Steele it was made from.   When you are swinging well, the Miura provides a softness that is different than anything you will experience. The look of the club itself is really beautiful.  
When you are swinging a bit off.  Or you miss a bit…I found the repercussions of the t100 line easier to handle. 
 

ultimately, I play the Miura tc201.  In the winter? I wish I had my t100s.

Any comments on turf interaction between the two? The leading edge grind looks very similar to me.

So what does the leading edge grind do? Doesn’t that reduce effective bounce which should cause more diggy turf interaction no? I keep seeing “improve turf interaction” but I don’t really understand that that means.

The leading edge has a bevel here, making it less sharp. This benefits golfers who come in steep or have good forward shaft lean at impact, because the leading edge WON'T dig - it almost glides along the turf through the impact zone.

 

As someone who falls into this category, I can attest to the benefits of irons with a leading-edge bevel.  The Grindworks PR-202 that I currently game have this, and the Mizuno MP-54 I previously gamed do not.  I get better turf interaction (less digging) with the Grindworks.

 

Note that golfers with more shallow swing planes (sweepers) are less likely to benefit from this

I hit the mc501 head to head with the t100 last week and hit them exactly the same. I can’t believe they’ll be much difference between the 201 & t100. 
so much is shape, looks, turf interaction all of which is personal to your swing.

Great explanation. The great thing is that is doesn’t disadvantage players with shallow AOA unless you are REALLY shallow (like -1). In the case irons with a straight cut are preferable due to the higher stability of the contact point

Thank you for the response but I’m confused because the video on Titleist Vokey state the worn edge reduces bounce and makes the edge sharper. 
 

I thought a steep player would want more bounce. 
 

I’ve heard both argument and it’s quite confusing lol.

@llaw999 you need to consider bounce as a separate issue from leading edge relieve. Leading edge relief is just a bevel right at the front edge of the iron/wedge.  In theory this bevel does create a hint of bounce, as the front edge is not flush with the turf. But this leading edge is not anywhere near the 8-12* of bounce you might see on a wedge.

 

Bounce is where the sole of the club is curved (i.e. not flat against the turf from the front edge to the back edge), which raises the leading edge off the turf. But if you lean the shaft forward enough, you could make the leading edge flush with the turf again.

 

Most irons tend to have very little bounce, especially blades, though many game improvement irons will have some bounce to add some forgiveness.

 

You can have (1) high bounce with no bevel, (2) high bounce with bevel, (3) less bounce with no bevel, or (4) less bounce with bevel

 

If you are starting out with a wedge with #1 (say 12* of bounce, but no bevel), such a wedge could in theory be more forgiving to diggers than a wedge with 5* of bounce.  And if you removed some of that bounce (i.e. via a custom grind), the leading edge would now be closer to the turf, and using the same steep swing it could dig more.

 

But the scenario we are talking about here are irons with #4 (less bounce, with relief).  I can't find the exact bounce specs for the TC-201.  But I know the Mizuno MP-54 I used to game had progressive bounce, from 1* in the 4i to 5* in the PW.  So for such an iron, the leading edge would be more flush to the turf.  If you then bevel the front edge just a bit, the front edge is no longer flush with the turf (though you haven't really added bounce to the sole of the club).  This allows the leading edge to glide along the turf through the impact zone, rather than digging into the turf, for steep players.

I think titleist came out with a great new iron in that T100 but on the other hand Miura is just so good and so consistent. I would go with Miura over anyone.
