May I share something? Driver Issues

Hey All, its been a while!  I wanted to share something.  Its sort of an "Ah ha" moment,  BUT it has stuck around for quite some time.  I hate to Jinx it now, but the application seems to work.

Real quick, I have struggled with my driver for YEARS, posted many times on here. Driver is my absolute weakest part of my game.  Could never find a fix.

TL: DR version.

My driver stats have improved dramatically. The biggest way I can tell?  I am NOT buying more golf balls (seriously)  I am not losing golf balls due to penalties at a significant rate that I used to before.  Last 10 rounds, I have seriously only used 1 ball or at most 2 balls, per round.  NORMALLY I lose about 2-5 and on really bad rounds I have lost up to a dozen (yups you read that right) in  round.

What changed?  I do NOT at all roll, twist or move my wrist in the takeaway.

Stop reading if you dont want the depth of conversation.

OK context version.  For years I paid minimal attention to the back swing and or struggled to understand how it impacts the swing as whole.  I always started with the impact and worked backwards,  left wrist bowed, shaft lean blah blah blag.  Roll release, etc etc.

About 6 months ago, I was watching something on youtube to mess up my golf swing as I always do and came across a specific video about the hands go back in one piece, the toe of the club when the club is parallel to the ground is NOT pointing straight up and down as well as club head outside of the hands.

For a long time I followed the rule that the toe of the club was to point up to the sky on the back swing.  This meant that I had to open or roll my hands open slightly. NOW to have a square face you have to move it back or time the face closure to match. My timing sucks.  The video was showing about a square face through the rotation of the swing.

The Club face stays basically the same angle to the spine around the swing. Meaning if I am at address with my spin tilted the club face is generally the same. (Screen shot of Collin Morikawa as an example)

2144004179_Spinevsclubface.png.a1798c76ebd9d70998bd7679670028ad.pngDriver.png.f7239f21a437d1a64fa844c1f760f9d9.png

So to above, on the contrary, of having the iron/driver toe /Face  point up and down rather than above matching or close to the spin tilt. This then stops me having to manipulate the face upon impact.

OK additional trickle down revelations

Next on to the down swing a LOT of things change for me in regards to impact, since I didnt have to close or consciously close the face,  I reduce the need to time things.  Where sometimes I would have massive slices, or bad hooks. Especially when the timing was horrible.

Now I experimented with all 3 grips, weak, neutral and strong.  They ALL work the same but the ball starting direction slightly changed. A strong grip for me personally feels the most comfortable though and thats what I am using.  Ball starts right and due to better rotation I get a nice draw.  The harder I swing as well, the ball doesnt curve due to the passive hands.  It just accelerates the head allowing me to hit the ball longer (and straighter).

This was from last week,

Never have I hit so many long shots, with accuracy ever.   Now, I ONLY have about 100-105 swing speed,  Granted these are all down wind,  it was a hot day and dry. LOTS of roll (flat though not down hill)  Birdied both of these holes ( 1st hole was a Par5 2nd was a Par4)

All I can say, is I seem to be swinging free and hitting the ball way more consistent than I ever have in my golfing career.  Its mind blowing how a simple change, changes your whole swing sequence and creates stability and consistency!

Awesome, my backswing thought has always been keep the club face pointed at the the ball as long as possible, which accomplishes the same thing that you describe.

I wanted to share this thought, to possibly someone that might be struggling with slices or OTT/ Early Extension.  As a quick fix to see what their body does in reaction.

this was a very simple fix that seemingly took shape almost immediately.  it was surprising to say the least.

There was a whole bunch of other things that ended up happening during the resulting sequence,  but was curious if anyone had found results with something similar or if someone struggling now could try and see if it did anything to their over all swing? What the heck right LOL.  cant hurt to share, it could help someone?

I guess you didn't read through this forum thread:  https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/1721548-do-you-throw-or-twist/

I did just recently see that thread pop up, but I did not get around to reading it.  Well that crashed my thread LOL (thanks for deflating me HAHA im just kidding)

Wow talk about late to the party.   Oddly I did not apply the video recently, again this is about 6 months in the making.  And honest to good truth the reason why it came up and I posted this thread.  I went outside to check my stash of balls? I bought 4 boxes (2 dozen each box, so 8 dozen, 96 balls) of the Callaway Hex Soft. because I was losing so many balls and costco had a special 20.99 for 2 dozen.  I still have 3 full boxes (72 balls) sitting outside, and again 6 months now, I still have 3 sleeves from the first 2 boxes, So I went through 15 balls in the last 6 months.  Basically playing weekly, Yes I did use some balls for more than 1 round if it was not beat up.

I used to lose A LOT... now I can last a round without losing ball this was my revelation, fortunately I guess!
