A Texas man who brought his family into a scheme to make money by defrauding the Augusta National Golf Club out of tickets was sentenced Monday to 28 months in prison.

Michael Freeman, his parents and his sister pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Augusta in June 2019, admitting their roles in the scheme which the FBI lead investigator conservatively estimated brought in $530,000.

Washington Avenue sellers help keep you from winning too.  They enable half of those who enter just to resell.   Half the resold tickets are bought by Washington Avenue resellers who sell the same ticket 4x in a day.  If you cut all that out.  Required a ID to match ticket name , then you’d significantly up the chances of winning the lottery.  People who don’t intend to go won’t enter.

Amazing how quickly the FBI responds to this while there are scammers out there ripping off people online making millions every year. I guess anything that affects the repuation of the rich or hits a rich people gets more immediate attention.  

 

That said only 28months in jail? This dirt bag is def not new to scamming. Should had been 10years. A lot of guys wont mind 28 months for $500k.

This is a little different. There is a bit more of a trail to follow. Many scams are almost impossible to track.

Absolutely Blade, treat it just like airline tickets!  If you suddenly can't go then you turn them back in to organization and they sell them to the next person in line.   In the old days we called gross over charging for tickets "scalping" and it was illegal.  Once the lobbyists got involved and government could tax it, it suddenly becomes a legal business... LOL.

What really bugs me is that when I first started watching the Masters, you could still get on the waiting list.  It was about a 20 year wait, but I could have had tickets since about 1992.  Way too smart for that.  One of my friends son works for some huge bank, and they get multiple tickets every year.  How does that happen?
