Knee Brace - Best One For Golf?

TylerJ89

Recommended Posts

My dad had a double knee replacement back in 2013, and unfortunately he was allergic to the bone cement that was used, so he ended up having them replaced AGAIN. He has hit balls maybe once a year for the last 7 years but is really missing it and is trying to get back into the game.

Before his operation, he was down to a +6 hdcp, so he can hit the ball.  He is now 65 years old and just moved into a retirement community with 2 full size 18 hole courses so he is really missing it.  He has been to the range once a week for the past few months and is hitting the ball pretty decent, but has mentioned he is interested in a brace for his left knee to keep it stable.

He now has a very short/slow swing, but still hits it dead straight every time.

What are some of the best knee braces for stability in a golf swing?  It is for his left knee and he is a right handed golfer (if that matters).

Price isn’t really a concern.  I just want to get him whatever will help him the most.

Thanks in advance!

I'd contact some local physio places or sports medicine doctors and I'd look into a custom fit brace, they can make a brace for almost any need and it will be fit to your dad's leg. These will cost more but if price is no object it's well worth it, plus they will be 100x better than some off the shelf option.

I have partially torn ACL and use a Shock Doctor ultimate knee brace when I Crossfit and it works really well and provides excellent support and comfort.

I feel your dads pain..I had bilateral knee replacement in 2014 and I still have issues...I had a lot of success with McDavid braces. I had custom braces prior to surgery and they never worked as well as the McDavid braces.

This one worked for me.

Never trust the guy who does crossfit, lol.

Your Dad would be best off seeing his primary care provider, and talking through his options. Maybe there's some physical therapy options that would strengthen the muscles around the knee enough to where he wouldn't need a knee brace? Either way, something over the counter might lead him right back to the operating table. A lot of folks get these braces and think they can push it even harder, and then end up injured again. Best option is the safest option IMO.

What do you think I was doing CrossFit for? It was to strengthen the muscles around the knee and now I don't use the brace anymore.  The point of the brace is stabilization to be able to do a little bit more day by day. Yes you could potentially get hurt and be sent back to square one but this always a possibility even under doctor's supervision.  The point of rehab is to recover lost performance and I'm sure that anyone who has had surgery already knows that they must pace themselves. Next of all CrossFit is amazing for general fitness if done properly...just like anything else.  The partially torn ACL that I have was worked around by modifying the workouts and now I can do full range of movement without the brace and don't have to modify the workouts anymore.  Shock Doctor braces are really good also and the best I've ever seen at providing stability while also allowing proper range of motion at a reasonable price.

Oh man, this is really, really annoying. When you can't do what you love because of an injury, it's very sad. I hope your father can get back into the game. The braces idea is great! It seems to me that it is very important for him to choose a good one if you say that he has frequent allergic reactions. After my knee replacement, I ordered a brace from dunbarmedical.com/. Give it a try, I think you will find something suitable for you. Good luck to you and your father! Hope we meet you on the golf course!

Has he tried KT Tape? While I don’t  have that level of injury, I’ve had multiple cartilage tears and an MCL repair and it works wonders. I use the Pro Extreme and I can shower with it multiple times before they come off. If he doubled up on the typical strips using 6 instead of 3 it’ll probably be quite stable. So much more comfortable than the braces I used to wear

Off the shelf braces are a waste of money.. Get fit.. I have been wearing knee braces for 15 plus years

Go in and see a local brace specialist or 2.. Find something that he likes and feels comfortable wearing for long periods of time.. Nothing worse then getting a hour into a game and u have take the brave off as it's not fitting right or its bothering u...

Not much use having a brace if u can't wear it for extended periods of time.. I need a new one this year as I can't wear mine for more then a hour or so before I take it off due to rubbing..

He needs to see his orthopedic surgeon and have one ordered specifically for him. I need a knee replacement fairly soon because I have arthritis on the inside of me knee - I was prescribed and fitted for this brace because it’s specific for my problem. To try to buy one off the rack when your dad has an orthopedic surgeon who can tell him exactly what to buy is pretty silly.

I've had both knees scoped, both with arthritis and a bone spur too and it's pretty hard walking on the golf course, especially hills - but I still do.  I've resorted to using a knee sleeve to help alleviate the pain a bit, although it doesn't work that great, but it helps.  I've been using Riptgear sleeve and they work pretty well and are comfortable and stabilizing as well.  It's not a brace but acts more like a stabilizer.  After getting shots in my knees this winter I'm hoping I can still play this season and push off any further repairs (replacement) as long as possible.  Sleeve is worth a try at least before going to something more extensive.
