Who makes an Anser 2/NP2 style head with a thicker top line?

Recommended Posts

In a mix of trying to decide what I want for a potential custom and just what is currently catching my eye through social media scrolling I've been looking at a lot of Anser 2 style putters lately for some reason. One thing I do notice with a lot of them is a thinner top line and I tend to prefer a thicker top line on my putters, so who makes a Anser 2 style putter with a thicker top line and here's the kicker, lefty as well?

I know most if they get bulk heads usually mill off the face a bit more to achieve desired weight and that's still fine with me.

Edit: no need to be lefty only, just make it a resource for others possibly looking.

Sorry. This may not be of much help, but I have an Anser 1-style Gene Nead 3/4 and the top line is nice and thick. Obviously Gene isn’t making putters anymore, but what about a Lajosi Mini Sensor? I bet he could do a left-handed one. Of course, you’d have to be okay with a 3/4 Anser 2 style. I personally love the mini style, but it may not be for you.

I agree with the post above about TP Mills Flat T having a thicker top line. I owned a Trad II XL (Anser 1 style) for a while and it’s top line was pretty thick. It also felt/sounded fantastic. David may not do lefties though.

The two Anser 2 models I know that have relatively thick topline are Byron Morgan's 615 and David Mills' Flat T.

Not sure if they make these in left handed though.

I know 615 wasn't in LH, I think Byron will be doing 620s in LH eventually and that model has been appealing lately.

Flat T doesn't come LH but David definitely does a thick top line, I have a Trad II and love that look at address. Would definitely think about a Flat T if David made LH ones, I can always email him down the road.

Not sure I'd like a mini putter but that Sensor is a really nice model regardless of top line size.

I do wish David did more LH putters, I mean he's a lefty himself and does make a great putter. I currently have a Trad II that I love and roll well.

I know about the Kronos and I just wish it came in a regular neck or flow neck. Long neck isn't bad but I putt much better with some toe hang, but I am keeping my eye out for a used one at a decent price.

Carbon has come back on my radar recently after listening to a podcast with them and seeing more recent work. I'm kinda waiting for one of their sales that they do ever now and then, sometimes it's like 30% off which is huge. I am waiting for them to have a Ringo Flow Neck as an option again, the one good thing is being a lefty all their lefty putters are milled to order so I can get a thicker top line will just be heavier which is actually perfect for me.

Adding a vote for Lajosi here; his sensor (NPT 2) topline is quite think when compared to most, and he could make it any thickness you wanted (milling out a deeper cavity instead). Great value when buying in USD. Oh, and does the best work in the world too...

This is where being a putter ho help and hurts as I just realized the other day that my Miura KM-006 has a nice thick topline on it RH would be the KM-009. I just haven't grabbed it in a while as I'm not feeling the grip and lie which I plan to change out.

I have two Low Tides and just put an order in for a 3rd.

1) Low Tide Fin w/ flow neck - my full toe hang experiment; got it for cheap on eBay to see how I’d fare with a short flow neck, despite my fitting telling me I’m a slight arc or even SBST.  Probably a great putter for those who like maximum toe.

2) Low Tide Drift stainless w/ plumbers neck - this little beauty was outperforming my go-to mallet for when I can’t sink a putt on fast greens.  I’m in love with the “click” it makes on impact.  Distance control was money.  My new favorite putter (I have 9 putters currently...), 4:30 toe hang worked surprisingly well for my slight arc swing, so I will stick with the plumber.

3) Low Tide Drift Carbon oil can - I love my stainless drift so much I saw this today and had to have it.  My first carbon putter, we shall see how she putts but I expect I will be the problem if it doesn’t ace.

If you decide to take the plunge and don’t want to wait for a custom, check the workshop “putters for sale” page semi regularly; he adds pre-made customs as they’re available, maybe one a week based on what I’ve seen.  They’re aesthetically designed better than what I could come up with anyway.

Definitely unique shape, I'm not against that it's just reviews on them but now I see a few. But like @NaodularI would prefer to buy a used one at first to see what I think, that way if I don't like it I'm not out a ton of money. But they don't come up often especially in LH, but I'm looking. Also Naodular nice collection.

What other putters do you own? I’d love to hear what you’re comparing these low tides to, as I’ve been intrigued by low tide in the past, but like MattM97, I didn’t want to crushed on resale if I didn’t like it as much as I had hoped.

Not Naodular but I've had Xenon, a few Carbon's, Toulon (current gamer), Kevin Burns, Nike b2-01, and the Low Tide was the best feeling.  I bought mine straight from him as a demo head he had left over and sold it for profit, I think they hold their value pretty decently.

All excellent builders.  If you’ve got the scratch, don’t forget Olson as well.

I’d also suggest Mack Made.  Newer to the scene but very talented.  Strikes me as more experimental if you want to try new head shapes.  Check out his Instagram page.  He quoted me $650 “any way you want it” for a prototype slide mallet.  Haven’t moved on it yet but you can’t beat that pricing for whatever custom specs your heart desires.

I think I read your story somewhere in the forums, which led me to find his pre-made section.  I’ve bought 2 pre-mades direct and one used.  He does ship the pre-mades within a week.

Regarding blades, I’ve compared it to an Olson long neck, Scotty Newport 2 (not a fan), Swag, Betti SS28, and I’ll be comparing it to a custom Lajosi on Monday and a Miura KM-009 on Tuesday.  The fact that it outperforms a custom Olson Longneck (at least double the price) is pretty impressive.  Granted that’s my personal experience.

I have a pretty eclectic smorgasbord of putters - few of the same type - so I’m looking forward to comparing the Low Tides to more of their “competition.”

What other putters do you own? I’d love to hear what you’re comparing these low tides to, as I’ve been intrigued by low tide in the past, but like MattM97, I didn’t want to crushed on resale if I didn’t like it as much as I had hoped.

I would agree with @chadwickog.  They should hold their value - especially in a traditional drift/plumbers neck orientation - but due to having less overall notoriety it may take slightly longer to move in a narrower market.  Most putter ho’s like myself would be all over a Low Tide BST listing.

Matt,

Obviously there's a lot of good info already on here and low tide is definitely a solid option for a thick top line but I can say having just worked with Kari Lajosi that he has at least 4 versions of the sensor model.  He was able to make my top line thinner upon my request (7.2 mm or about .28").  I know he can do the same for going thicker than normal as well.  He's really good at being upfront about what range he can thick regarding thickness.  Oh and he does left hand as you probably know.  So if you like his dd201 or sensor, you might start by finding how exactly how thick you'd like your putter to be and see if that's something he can offer.

Just wanted you to know the top line thickness is adjustable.

Know what head weight, face milling and type of metal you are wanting?

If you ever look to move that drift oil can uhh... let me know. I was eyeing that when he was posting it.

Awesome collection, let us know how it compared to the Lajosi and Miura when you get a chance. Always liked Kari's work and have the LH version of that Miura.
