Aldila VS Proto tipping needed?

Anyone still play the VS Proto shaft? Have a 70-S I plan to install in my driver and 80-S in my 3 wood. Was going to install both untipped-but saw a note online about FW woods needing to be tipped 1". Would appreciate any 1st hand experience on how these play tipped.

"Need" is a bit strong a word.   It's the recommendation from the manufacturer to account for the fact that the fairway heads are heavier than the driver head.   If you're unsure just install it untipped but leave it an inch longer on the butt side and go test it choked up.   If it feels fine and performs well, then you can trim the butt down to the actual length.  If it feels a bit soft then you can go back and tip it that 1".

OK thanks- That makes sense. I'll try one installed without tipping and see how it feels.

 

If I do decide to tip, would the same tipping apply to the 5W and 7W if I used the same VS shafts in those, or do you have to tip different for each wood?

Aldila recommends the same for all fairways but again, that's just a recommendation.  Other shaft manufacturers might use different recommendations,  e.g. 1/2" for 3w,  1" for 5wd, 1-1/2" for 7w.    Hard to say what would really work best for you as there are just too many different factors in the build and in your swing that contribute to the stiffness feel.   Personally I'd wait to see what happens with the driver and 3wd before deciding what to do with the 5w or 7w.

I would love to add a question to this thread...

 

I have the exact same driver shaft, uncut, just waiting for my tip to come in from golfworks and it's a brand new 46" 70-s same as mentioned above. Would like it to play stiffer. How do I go about doing this? I have all the tools, just not the knowledge!

Just following up... Installed the shaft without any tipping in my 3W and ballflight is really high and seems like it's ballooning  quite a bit with a loss of distance. Going to try it at 1" tipped and see if that helps. Hopefully shaft firms up some.

But how does it feel?    Tipping really is all about adjusting the feel of the shaft, not about trying to control launch and spin.    So if it clearly feels too soft, then yes, go ahead and tip.   Just don't assume it's too soft based on the ball flight.   There are lots of reasons (other than stiffness) that could be causing the high ball fight.

Interesting. Doesn't feel too soft or noodle like- but I do think I could go stiffer and still feel like it was loading. I'll try it at 1" and report back...
