#TripleP - Ping Putter Project

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

What better way than to jump in than starting a thread on my first project!

Below is the first Ping putter I have recently bought and looking to restore.

This is a Ping Myday!

This is my first project with anything like this. So would really appreciate any help or information anyone can give with regards to the process I should use plus the best equipment.

Here are some pictures below.

Thanks in advance!

My recommendations

B60 Grip, fitting, wash with Comet or Ajax and a toothbrush, change the paint fill. Note the patented in the cavity, unusual.

MyDay Same advice except mix up a little lemon juice to a paste and clean it with a toothbrush. Nothing major needed.

The Shea I'd strip the paint, clean it up with sand paper, dry then wet, then use Scotch steel wool as a final sand. Then torch it. Change the grip and fit it of course. Paint fill to taste.

Sounds like fun project keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you think I would need to soak the first two or not?

Also, what would you recommend to use to strip the paint? And would I need to remove the insert before torching?

What was the process you used?

The first Zing I did spent a day in coca cola, followed by a full polish and sanding job to remove all the dings and marks, then a buff... With this MyDay I wanted it to look a bit more original, so what I did was just buff the sole, face, and the back edge along the bumpers where the MyDay script is. Then re did the fil with a white to look stock. Then just added a big strip of lead tape to get the head weight up a bit. Re gripped and have been playing it, my dad played the Zing I did the more extensive work on. I'll post pics of em later when I get home.

was thinking would be best to soak these in Coca Cola first.

how did you find best to do the full with white as I’m looking to do the exact same?

if you could post some pictures that would be great

I kinda like to clean out the letters a touch with a pick, they arent usually formed the greatest and have some casting remnants, then just the usual deal, cover the whole area with the paint let it set up a bit, wipe accross it with acetone on a paper towel, but not hard enough to pull the paint out of the letters.

Heres the clean up process of the first Zing, I think I did some further polishing after this and then the paint. (og condition, after coke, after sanding)

B60 soaking is not needed it is stainless steel. I like the MyDay the way it is. Just a light cleanup is all I would do.

Here's an example. I bought a rocker sole dalehead Anser on Ebay for $30.00 because it looked like the top line was thinner than my dalehead.  When it arrived I washed it and putted with it  a bit. Then I had it bent to fit me. Putted with it some more and liked it enough to continue working on it. Next week I'll lengthen it and put a standard Pure grip on it. I'll swingweight it, add some lead tape in the cavity and putt more seriously with it. Then I have a few decisions to make

So I’ve been cleaning up the putters and was wondering what you guys would recommend to get in and clean the corners?

I was thinking a dremel tool which I could then use to polish them a bit too

Maybe take a wooden dowel and sharpen it to a point or square, and use it with some kind of abrasive to clean out the corners.

You could use just about anything depending on what you are trying to remove.    I would first try Bar Keepers or Comet and a few drop of oil to make a paste.  If you need something more agresive, maybe a pinch of gravel dust and oil.  You could also get some abrasive cloth or sandpaper from the hardware store and wrap it over the wooden tool you make.
