Trying to spot the reason for rotation stall/flip

Hey everybody,

ive tried to figure out the reason for my stall and flip. I’m watching the video (not the best angle I understand) and I notice my layoff and drop is significant, not sure if that has anything to do with it.  Does anyone see something that I’m missing or have a good training feel for rotation?  Any help is appreciated

Im not an instructor by any means but is that tipping back/shallowing move you have at the top opening the club face too much?  Then you need to stall to square it up?  I just wonder because it looks similar to someone else I know who does this and it helped him to keep more club face awareness when doing that shallow move which opens the face - either add the motorcycle wrist move or think of pointing the club face to the ground momentarily from the top as a feel.

The video doesn't reveal everything, but here's a couple of points that I see:

1) You gradually move your pelvis towards the target line in the back swing. That is a very typical trait for early extension - which you do. You need to move your trail hip away from the target line during the back swing, so that the center of the pelvis doesn't move forward. A part of this is that you quit turning your hips towards the ball. The hips are literally square at impact. Ideally you should transfer weight to trail heel at the top, shift the pressure to the front foot during transition - and pressurize the front heel just prior to, or around impact.

2) You don't shift pressure to the front foot during transition. The shift seems to happen gradually during the down swing. A receipt for flip if you ask me.

You could e.g. check out Montes cast no turn drill. It may serve you well.

Your backswing has no depth.  Then you drop your left shoulder to come from the inside.  That will thrust your pelvis and cause a stall.

You either need to get your hands deeper in the backsiwng, use your wrists to keep the club head behind you or a bit of both.

That will allow you to stay in right tilt longer and rotate.  Trail shoulder dropping Early or too much is a very common stall issue.

So I got two better videos today of my swing. Back and front on. I was trying to feel a deeper hand backswing and rotation through but i can still see the lack of depth and stall clearly. Wasn’t hitting it terribly but definitely lacking what I want to be doing

Better turn and depth.  Your hand path in downswing is the issue - hands work down and out, yours work down and back.  Result is you over tilt and slid hips and end up hitting the ball with closed shoulders.

here is downswing hands path - more down than out with the out coming from turn

I like that first video, makes a lot of sense. I think/know i have a misunderstanding of feel for the rotation through the golf ball.  I've relied a lot on timing and hands.

First , your backswing is too long with the iron that you are playing. Bubba Watson may be able to pull it off , but your long backswing is just creating more potential for errors in your downswing.

The center of your downswing problems are two issues You have a misunderstanding of how to shallow the shaft . Then you move your pelvis and hips far too much laterally

toward the target in order to try to shallow the shaft.

The correct movement is to externally rotate your trail shoulder in transition . This in turn will cause your TRAIL  ELBOW  to rotate a little TOWARDS the target line not just straight down. Sort like LOSING an arm wrestling contest. The best video on YouTube illustrating this is “elbow quiz” by Kelvin

Miyahira.

Because you have failed to perform the correct trail shoulder rotation  in transition , you then try to shallow via lateral movement of the body. While lateral motion is necessary to weight your lead foot and is considered to be a shallowing motion , ANYTIME THAT YOUR LEAD HIP MOVES LATERALLY BEYOND THE OUTSIDE Of YOUR LEAD FOOT,YOU ARE MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE YOUR PELVIS  ANY FURTHER IN AN ANGULAR MOTION. Thus a stall is guaranteed . This is because anatomically you have moved your lead hip joint so that it no longer has the range of motion to move away from the target line.

To summarize

shorten the backswing

rotate your trail elbow towards the target line in transition

make sure that you limit lateral motion on the downswing so that the outside of your lead hip NEVER moves beyond the outside of your lead foot.

Absolutely right on the length of my swing, been something i've needed to work on for sure.  I watched a few videos on the external rotation as well and it makes a lot of sense.  I appreciate the feedback!!

You never really rotate or turn back and therefore you never turn through. Your swing is basically up and down very little turn.

So I’ve been taking all this feedback in and I’m understanding it more and more. Trying to find a drill or feel for this, I’m wondering if the Faldo “pre-set” drill would be beneficial for improvement. Any thoughts on this? Or if something else, what would you recommend to help the feel of creating depth and helping get my hands on their proper swing path?

Lesson with good teaching pro.   Doing it on your own is very difficult.  Chasing drills is a path that often leads to confusion and frustration.
