I played before I got married, but stopped when we had kids.

I'm back out and only able to play a few times but getting my son into it.

 

I believe previously my best score was about a 106.

Just getting back into it, my current avg score is probably around a 126 for a Par 72.

 

I started tracking my putts and I'm averaging about 2.75 per hole.

I hope to chronicle my improvement here.

Got out to play today.

40 puts on 18 holes

I had problems hitting fairways.  A couple really bad drives.

(and by bad, I mean to the right.  Push slices.)  High towering blasts that sacrifice length.

 

 

I usually hit my 5 wood sound but was hitting off the toe today.  A few wasted shots there.

 

My 20 year old Cleveland VAS+ wedges played okay.

I'm hitting a lot of stuff high though.  I'll switch to a more normal (current age) club this winter / next spring.

 

57 and a 52 for a 109.

Best round of the year for me.

Slowly improving.

 

Might just play irons from now on.  Less erratic.

 

I played with family and friends on the first nine. None of us great golfers and I found myself rushing more and trying to help them look for balls.

Back nine I got paired with another player who appeared to be pretty good.  I was walking and he was on a cart.

So I kind of felt pressure to at least make a playable ball rather than spend time in the woods.

I think this helped my mindset because I went irons rather than woods and although I was shorter I didn't lose balls as often nor penalty strokes.

*puts on my thick Minnesotan accent* welcome back to this here great game fellow Minnesotan! Nothing wrong with playing just irons for now imo, but you may want to sprinkle in some wood play, so you don't have an iron swing with a wood. That being said, I'm just a high handicapper myself who shoots low 90's if you extrapolate my average scores to 18 holes.

Thanks for the slightly thick Minnesotan accent. It only sounds slight to me, and makes me feel at home.

 

Good point of still needing to swing the woods.

I was surprised how bad I was with my 5-wood yesterday. Normally it's a very strong club for me, but I think every time I swung it, it was a miss-hit.

 

Really fun to be out and playing however.

Welcome back to the game. Hearing your proposal, I support you ditching the driver and play a 6 or 7 of the tee. If it kills you, do a wood or hybrid instead.

A bad drive just butchers the hole and starts you in debt. Lost balls, penalty stroke, punch outs, confidence killer, and for what? I wish you the best.
