Broken shaft removal from adapter

I recently broke my driver shaft at the edge of the adapter sleeve. How should I remove the remaining shaft from the adapter?

 

I plan to drill out the shaft in steps with increasingly wider drill bits. Then, I’ll use a hosel honing drill bit to clean out the last bits of shaft. I plan to heat the adapter tip with my heat gun prior to drilling. 
 

Is this the best approach?

I would just order a new shaft adapter or get a new shaft with one already attached.  Not too expensive.

Yes, that's the right approach.

That aluminum is very soft so you need to be very careful when drilling it out at all. I prefer to use one drill hole followed by a long screw. You can then heat the tip and pull the screw with pliers or shaft puller.

I'd use some heat on the adapter to break down the epoxy and then drill.  The bit will bite into the shaft and cause the epoxy bond to shear and the shaft nub will spin.  If it doesn't use a little more heat.

That's a great suggestion.  I may give it a shot.  My only concern is heating the adapter tip then putting it in the rubber vise coating of my shaft puller. I don't want to ruin the rubber jaws..

Yes, this was my initial thought.  I assume by breaking down the epoxy the remaining graphite shaft will either break down with the drill bit, or spin enough to be pulled out (with the screw suggestion from Adam C above).

You don't need the rubber jaws, just the plain vise jaws. If you are worried about scratching the adapter, you can put 2-3 layers of masking tape or duct tape over the vise jaws first.

If it were me, I'd toss it and buy a new adapter.
