No Penalty Area Stakes at Winged Foot?

Recommended Posts

Watched a few minutes of the US Open this evening and noticed there seemed to be no penalty area stakes along a stream crossing one of the fairways. Perhaps I missed them. Presumably there was paint, but I couldn't see that either.  I'm a little surprised that the USGA doesn't both stake and paint. (I believe that Hootie, Billy and Co at Augusta are too proud to have such plebeian do-dads on their hallowed grounds.)

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

I mention only for the benefit of those who don't know it (sui generis  knows it full well!) that a stream meets the definition of a penalty area whether marked or not.  If the ones he refers to are not marked there must be some way of knowing without doubt where the edge is.  I have seen this done by the way the grass was cut  where the ground started sloping down to the water.

And now that you can ground your club in a penalty area it really doesn't matter if you are in a penalty area or not as long as you can hit your ball.

No stakes or paint means yellow hazard?  There is a hole on my local course that has a water penalty area down the left side.  Depending on the tee position, it could be in front or to the side (lateral).  It's about 200 carry to go over it to a more advantageous part of the fairway or you can play it lateral and still be in the fairway.  No markings.

Unmarked Penalty Areas are red (you'll find confirmation in the Definitions).

The penalty areas at Winged Foot are definitely defined by painted lines.  I don't know if there are stakes identifying them or not, but I would think there are.  The USGA tries to do everything by the book, using its competitions as examples of how things are to be done.

That was my thought. I'll confess to watching just a half an hour. (One can only abide a few minutes of Azinger's banality and DeChambeau's antics.) But, I was surprised to not see penalty area stakes identifying that small stream crossing the fairway. They could have been so widely spaced that they weren't in the picture.

I was just watching Finau take relief from a Red Penalty Area (not very close to the fairway nor the green) and all I could see was a single red stake indicating the existence of the ditch.

Good, thanks for that. Now watch to see if anyone tees it up on a bottle cap. ?

Trust me, there are red lines defining the edge of the penalty area.  The USGA aren't sloppy in markings.

The trifecta, Azinger describing Fatrick & DeChamble's playoff. Sorry to have missed it, we're playing golf in Asheville on Sunday afternoon. ?

Yes, there's no question about that, I was merely discussing the stakes I saw. That being said, I don't recall seeing the line but that's due to the rough height. ?
