I butt trimmed my irons and the sound changed...

Recommended Posts

I had a set of irons I wanted to try out 3/8" increments on instead of the 1/2" it had.

I butt trimmed from 9 iron thru 3 iron..

the flex decreased a bit and the swingweight is lowered, but that's really no issues,

the problem is the sound totally changed, from being a heavy crisp sound, they now
 sound weak and hollow ,,,

how can I fix this ?  will adding tip weights to regain the lost swingweight, take the sound back to normal as well ??

The sound shouldn't have changed, nor the flex.  If being strictly pedantic though, the flex will be ever so slightly higher, but you will need something like a frequency meter to notice.

Maybe you aren't finding the center of the face now because of the length and swingweight change?  You might want to play around with some lead tape to see if adjusting the swingweight will lead to better strikes.

j3 - PW

the shaft stickers were falling off , so I removed them awhile ago, but pretty sure they were DGs Rsomething.....

I will try to hit a few buckets over the weekend and play them on the course again, I have ordered a roll of lead tape to experiment with.....

Did you reuse the same grips or go with new ones? If so were the new ones the same grip as before? Grip selection plays a role in the feel and sound to clubs because it’s a shock absorber of sorts. Some like the CP2 midsize are very absorbent while grips like a UTX or Z Cord standard size are not very absorbent.

I also think the shorter length and SW might be affecting strike. I remember a long time ago when I first got into JDM gear I bought a Ryoma driver and a Crazy shaft and had the driver assembled at 44.5” as a forgiving fairway finding machine.

Picked them up and couldn’t hit the driver to save my life. Low on the face poor contact etc etc. Finally took it to another shop and the SW was C6 at 44.5”. Now obviously this is an extreme case but it does go to show that length and SW changes can have serious impact implications. Some are more sensitive than others.

I reused the same grips,

used these tools between the shaft and grip while pouring in dissolve liquid... lol !

during the assembly i used a layer or two of extra tape, because the grips stretched out a tiny bit...

this is a really weird one, never really heard of this before.  I’d suspect like others here, maybe you aren’t hitting the center anymore?  Do all the clubs in the set have a different sound?

I have only tried PW J7 and J3.

seems like the PW is about normal and J3 are most off.

I only chopped half an inch off the PW then progressivly more as the clubs got longer...

Interesting... I butt trimmed my 3 wood 1/2" and the same thing happened. Everyone I've talked to gave me the same, "nothing should change if you trimmed from the butt. It only changes if you tip trim," speech and recommended putting weight back on the head to restore the 3 swingweight points lost.

For me, the 1/2" shortening made the shaft feel super stiff (probably because I could not feel the head), lowered the ball flight and changed sound.

The feel of the shaft  and ball flight was corrected by adding weight back to the head using lead tape but the sound hasn't changed back.

Lost the crispy echo it had before and now it's a softer, duller sound. Almost exactly like putting on a vibration dampener on a tennis racquet.

So you started from a PW thats minus 0.5 inch, then 3/8" from that club all the way?
What have you done with head weight?
Was the PW a "good fit" as it became at minus 0.5"? (did you play a regular set as minus 0.5" earlier?)

Its a lack of info about "how and why", but if you can fill in here, i can most likely tell you how to tune it up right, between the lines it seems to be a head weight issue, (lack of head weight), but i would need some more info to run the numbers.

this set was +0.5" to begin with.

that's why I took the PW back to standard.

then I continued with 3/8" from there as I never tried it before... mostly to make the 3 iron end up a little shorter...

What about head weight adjustment?
- IF but only IF, that set who started from 0.5" plus, was made using standard weight heads (could be B-weight, who 7 grams below std to offset SW raise by going longer), your PW should now be at "standard SW" IF it has standard head weight.

If thats your "point ZERO", and you tried to make a "poor mans MOI match" based on that club, (make the others feel like your PW), then all shorter clubs needs a little head weight adjustment due to the 3/8" slope. IF you did nothing to head weight, thats your issue now

Here is the weight needed to get allk clubs on the same slope, even the PW needs 3 grams.

Your set should look like this then:

Hi !

ok, thanks .  that's correct I did nothing to head weight yet..

I have some tip weights and lead tape incoming,  I will try your numbers with tape until it feels right, and then try to add tip weights...
