Determining consistent distance

Curious how you all determine consistent club distances. Ideally, I would hit 10 or so shots with each club on a monitor but was curious if others have been successful using other methods. Using GPS on the course isn't cutting it and my range flags are not trustworthy. Prior to covid you could rent a bay at GG and use their monitor but of course that's out of the question. I didn't look very hard but haven't found a coach that will lend their equipment to such an endeavor.

I used gps on the course to determine how far I hit my clubs.  The trick for me is the number I really needed is carry distance not total distance.  I believe this is why so many guys come up short they measure total distance of a shot in the fairway with 10 yds of rollout then apply that on an approach shot into a false front the precludes any rollout.  Or they hit their PW 130 yds that one time and now they’ve decided that’s how far it goes.  On league night there is always a cut off for the last tee time that comes with the you have to be off the course by 4:30 (or whatever).  Now I’m on the course No tee times behind me my bag contains a 58*, PW, 7i, 4h, 3w.  I’ve already planned my club selection to each hole.  My home course the first hole has an elevated tee box and the fairway slopes uphill to the green. I skip the first hole completely there is no accurate data to collect here. Next hole is a long flat par five I tee off the turf with PW just enough club to reach the fairway, notting where the ball lands not where it stops. I move my ball to a flat lie and pull the 3w again watching where the ball lands and measuring that distance.  This provided me with baseline data on each club averaged 16 shots per club on the course.  Then a little math gave me the distances for the for the clubs that stayed home.   I printed and laminated a cheat sheet I’ve clipped on the outside of my bag.   From there I just make my on course adjustments based on lies and playing conditions.  I’m hitting more greens in regulation than ever because I’m hitting the club I need to not the one I think should get there.  I’ll admit there has been an ego struggle when pulling an 8i for shots that used to be a 9i but the handicap is dropping like a stone.

bring the scope to the driving range and hit at flags. you dont have to know every club. If you hit your PW at the 127 flag, and your 8 at the 150 flags, then we can guess your 9 to be a 138 club. Then of course you validate on the course. Not a bad idea to play a par 3 or executive course, when you get to hit alot of iron shots.

just my .02, but be careful using range balls, some are reduced distance, and most are made to take a beating so they don't behave like normal gamers, which could cause a difference from the range to the course.

You might be able to check with local pros who have set ups. Many at least in my area will allow you to rent an hour when their not booked for lessons, there you can bring you real balls and find the carry distance

I have a 10 to 12 yard gap. Got fitted for new shafts last month. So I went to the course and position myself at 150 with my range finder. Hit a 7, 8, and 9. Found my 150 club, 8 iron and went from there with my gaps. I did the same with long irons and found all my yardages. Also I feel that it is important to do this with the ball you game so there are no surprises when you tee it up for real. Hope this helps, good luck.
