Old and still relevant fairway woods

Nike VR Pro Limited Edition fairway woods (2011). Still use the 3 wood. One of the best line of clubs Nike produced. The driver from that line was great as well. I miss bonded drivers and fairway woods.

And those still see some love on tour, probably one of the oldest woods you'll find out there.

I'll always have a secondary/backup bag with Titleist 906f fairways in them because I think they are such a classic and solid fairway wood in both the F2 and F4 versions.

If you come across one of these fairways give them a try: R7 TP, Cleveland Launcher Comp and Mizuno MP Titanium. The most recently released club is the Mizuno at 10 years ago with the other two around 15 years ago which helps make them inexpensive.

All 3 have titanium construction in varying degrees, and all 3 have great distance. I say this not as they have good distance for old clubs, but have distance comparable to anything you’ll find today. Every now and then you’ll find an RBZ, 2016 M2, 917 or SIM that flys as far as your driver, true, but give one of these old boys a try some time.

The MP Titanium is truly one of the best, most vintage fairways ever made. Just gave mine to a buddy this year, and he bombs it. Forgot how solid it sounded as well.

Another vote for TM R7 TP. Burner 07 TP is also worth a mention. Heck, most TaylorMade fairways from 05-10 were pretty good. I don't care for their newer stuff.

And another vote for Tour Edge CB2. Played one with an OG Blueboard 83x for almost a decade before stupidly selling it looking for newer and better. Still miss it.

I'm truly surprised at the few posts mentioning Adams.  I have some Adams Super Fairways and Super Hybrids in XTD Ti.  They're as good as anything currently made.  Thinking I might have them refinished in the offseason...

Along with the MP-Titanium, I have posted more about Adams fairways than anyone. The Super LS is the longest fairway wood I've ever had. The XTD-Ti is also extremely good. Both could rival anything current that you could throw at them.

I would be happy playing just about any Titleist fairway wood, going back at least a decade.

Older TaylorMade models perform well, too, but I have never liked their aesthetics.

Obviously there are a lot of V-Steel junkies out there, but I would also be curious to see how the Callaway Steelhead and Steelhead+ would hold up today, if outfitted with a respectable shaft.

I've still got a Callaway Steelhead 5 wood, with the original RCH 36 Strong Flex shaft that seems to be magnetised to my bag as every time I try to shift it, it comes back. Head is so good out of all lies and the shaft is as solid as any I own.

Another vote for Nike VR Pro ltd and almost any Tour Edge head (E8 Tour was brilliant for me until the face cracked!).  Notable shouts to the Mizuno MP650 and Adam Tight Lies 2 heads which are great too.

I still use my Cleveland Launcher titanium 3 wood.  I have a backup in the garage that was my dad's in case something happens to mine.  I still trust that club more than anything but my 60degree wedge and the only time I"ve ever broken 80 was the day my buddy tossed my driver in the trunk of his car and said "you're hitting your 3 wood all day today"

Now if only I could find a mint MP Titanium 5 wood...

Well, it took awhile but I doubt one and got it built to my specs. Total cost just less than $100 for my 5 wood and it’s already one of my favorites. Don’t discount the good stuff from a few cycles back!

Any suggestions on getting sticker/lead-tape residue off?

I just retired my Nike Sumo 3 and 5 woods. Nothing wrong with them at all, but went with all TM top end.

There is a reason Tiger used a Sumo 3w for as long as he did. I loved hitting that club off the deck.

I still have 3w and 5ws of the V-Steel's and 906F2's.  906F2 being my fav of that time frame, 980F before that.  Next would be the XHP as I think that was the best fairway I've played (cracked 2 faces so gave up on replacing them) and have a lot of fond memories of shots hit with my XHP 80X Kai'Li combo.

I was the guy that thought new fairway woods were a big waste of money until I hit the XXIO Prime 9 Fairway woods. Have the Taylormade  Burners from 2009 that I loved plus the Ping G25 Fairway woods that I also thought were great. I was wrong!! There is no comparison. I was shocked. These new Fairway woods are way longer and there is little effort to make great contact. Example. I am 67 years old and for me a 3 wood goes Max. 210 yds. Yesterday in Florida GPS showed 236 to middle of green and my buddy I played with said what are you waiting on.” Just hit.”  I did. Should have waited as I put it in the bunker a couple yds.off of the green. New technology is for real. I learned and never thought so.

Man reading this thread has made me realize I've made some good choices lol. I have a Cleveland hibore xl 3 wood with an Aldila NV rip'd green that is just boring as all get out. Then possibly my favorite club that I call my 5 wood, an 17° Adams xtd ti super hybrid. Funny thing is I doubt the 3 wood is going anywhere, but it's probably the easiest club to take out, but that's mostly because I don't often need to use it.

Caution on RBZ fairway woods.

The original RBZ (green trim) had a stock 48-gram shaft, and was a bit too light. About every third hit turned left hard.

For original green, make sure you like the shaft. The original RBZ Tour had a heavier shaft.

image.png.d5c747f77a60113997310e613d5bb8dc.pngThe RBZ Stage 2 (gold trim) was a much better club, had a somewhat shallower head and launched better. Also the base Stage 2 (non-Tour) came with a more stable 60-gram shaft.

The RBZ Stage 2 3W/HL (17*) is a mainstay in my backup bag.

This thing has always been a cannon. Not sure why it says 18t instead of 5 wood but I got it out of some used rack with a Aerotech Steelfiber 85.

Pic angle makes it look a lot larger then it is.

Not sure of what the "T" denotes, but best guess is that it is 18* loft.
