Ah, seems like his specs have changes? Last I remember they were ~71* throughout the set but that looks more current.

Oh absolutely, I think AoA is probably the biggest factor for sure. Quick in, quick out, minimum of grass between the club and the ball.

Upright swing and more speed is an advantage from the rough ... Jack Nicklaus was the first to be known for this

Good find, seems his clubs have gotten flatter / less upright from when he first got out there. Stock 7 iron is right around 61-62*

I don't know why people are talking about "insanely" upright lie angles. He doesn't use those anymore.

 

When he first started, he was significantly more upright in posture and swing plane and used like 72*+ lie angles. All his irons are now only 66* lie angle and 37.5" in length, which is only 3.5* upright from a standard Titleist 6-iron...

Many have yelled and advocated for an upright down the line swing in history.  And they are usually cursed as heretics for it.  Lol.  Hogan worship and all.  Now you’ve seen the advantage in full view.   But wait. There’s more !    He can also adjust the face at address and only change path a degree or two and produce a fade - draw or a straight ball .  Requires loads of timing to produce those with a flat swing and lie angles.

Why would an upright lie cause the club to slice through the rough any better than an average lie club? The surface area, and thus resistance, is the same regardless of the lie. If anything, the closer the hosel gets to the face of the club the less room there is for the grass to travel between the hosel and face, causing a 'paddle' effect that would seem to actually increase resistance. 

 

It's my opinion his ability to handle rough better than his opponents is tied to the speed at which he goes through the rough. A faster club causes the grass to essentially liquify. Sounds absolutely crazy to type that btw. 

I haven't liquefied grass in a few years...

Bigger grips tend to hit fades and/or pushes.

More upright lie angle tend to hit draws and/or pulls.

 

Both on the irons would result in neutral.

I don't know a thing about the science behind it but it seems as though the club would be going through the ground similarly to any normal lie angle, given that the upright angles match his swing plane just as a standard lie ay match someone else's.

 

I more buy into what people are saying about longer short irons and steeper aoa. Nonetheless, very interesting idea.

plus henrik stenson said the best tip he ever got was from pete cowan, basically telling him to be upright lie angle when chipping to avoid grabbing in the rough

I'm tall at 6'5" and play my wedges at about +2.125/+2.25" (37.25"-37.625" LW-PW), 66.x lie angles. I swing pretty upright too. And if I'm in the rough, I swing steeper on purpose.  I have midsize grips with extra wraps and with wedges from the heavy rough I grab the grip more in my palms instead of fingertips and lock both hands tight.  Swing weight is in the low E's.  I usually don't swing that hard on my wedges, but I can really nuke my wedges if I feel I need to ("6 iron speed").  Sure, super heavy rough, esp. when wet, will cost me 1 or 2 clubs even with the wedges, and I might still miss left, but the miss is still gonna be on the green if it's a center pin and I've got distance right.  A lot of this is similar to all of the characteristics of Bryson's swing.  I've always felt that this upright nature of wedges was an advantage, and really, my wedges are the best part of my game.  I don't even hit them "that long" but that's because I hit them so high (not delofting the shaft much), and I like that.  Distances W/140, U/125, S/108/, L/90, even with those super long shafts.  Compare that to 110-115 driver, 300ish tee shots.

No, his irons have higher lie angle because of way he grips, not because of single length shafts or for any other reasons. I too game single length irons. If you look at Bryson's arms in relation to the shaft at address, the shaft is extended from his arms straight rather than on an angle. This is result of his single plane swing, very similar to Moe Norman's swing style. Just take your golf club and do what he does at address and see where your club head is, you will see it lying a lot flatter. Hence bryson has made his irons with more acute angle than usual.

Lol, his 5i is 1.5° stronger than my 3i.

 

Any idea how much of that is the SL wizardry and how much is the newer stuff just generally being lower lofted?
