Is Bryson the most disliked us open winner?

hell, I think they are all great. It’s not like any of them are mass murderers or cannibals.  They just play golf for a living.

Curtis Strange methinks. Looking back I don’t think people understood him. Then had a bout of depression after winning twice. Came to grip with some demons, and made it through. Good on him.

I don't think everyone dislikes him, I just think the people who dislike things tend to share their opinions more often. I like him, and I'm sure lots of others do as well. 

 

Its like when you look up a review of something you wanna buy, lets say a car. And you see 1000 posts online about issues with that car and think holy sh*t, but then you realize they sold 5 million of that car.... And the other 4.9 million owners didn't have any reason to share their dismay with the world.

I was too.  I like to see him win because it pisses people off.  But I'm very happy Bryson won for the same reason.  This kid hasn't done anything to anyone except to himself.

Most people dislike others who talk over them and show off their intelligence. I don't think he is a bad guy, but his personality is kind of "I'm smarter than you." Maybe he is a little misunderstood.

I'm just glad Wolf didn't win. No legit reason to dislike him. Sometimes you just look at someone and  instantly don't the like the cut of their jib

The kid is eccentric and big brained.  However having met him once and dealing with people that are in Golfing Machine circles, this kid is as humble as they come.  He's funny and teachable.  He's just different, and different isn't bad.

I don't really get the feeling he is disliked. As others have said there seems to be a loud group of people from the establishment who don't like what he is doing. But in the golf community at large he does not seem disliked. 

 

At my club on Saturday i probably heard 10 people say "anyone but Patrick Reed". The announcers mentioned a few times that if there were fans Reed would have had to deal with boos and taunts from the NY crowd

 

That guy is disliked.

That guy is disliked. 

We had an employee that said, Reed is a jerk, but in the Ryder Cup, he's OUR jerk!  Reed doesn't make it easy on himself, I will admit.

There are more than a few guys out there that play slow.  He's just on TV playing slow for all to see.  He's faster, but still slow.

Tiger is probably the most polarizing figure in golf in history.

 

He's done it his way, that seems to bug some folks anytime someone else has success and has a bit of a confident air, so no doubt he's disliked by legions of people who have never met him.  So maybe the most disliked, if it's a poll on wrx, of any recent U.S. Open winner.

 

Took a lot of guts, no pun intended, to set off on the journey he set off on and keep working at it, so I've never met the guy but have a lot of respect for what he's accomplished.

I can tell you from people that actually know him.  He's been told for a long time, "You can't play golf that way."  The Golfing Machine theory was the first.  Then came the am success.  Then the single length stuff.  That works for HIM, not anyone else because it's none traditional. Then the body transformation because he wanted to protect himself from injury in bulking up.  The dirty little secret it's also the Golfing Machine was of swinging the club which stays inside what the body is already designed to do (Physics basically) that is also helping him protect his back.  He started breaking down and realized that he needed more mass and we frankly even had doubts, but thus far it's working.  He was able to muscle the ball out of some pretty gnarly lies, but he was smart in how he played his shots.  Under par on the final day, are you kidding me?  He played smartly, took his medicine and saved par a ton.  It was impressive.

it’s not traditionalists, many people dislike HIM as a person, it’s going nothing to do with how he plays golf.  He’s got a track record of being abusive to referees, and broadcasters.  He’s been entangled in terrible slow play issues.  And honestly, he seems to have a terrible attitude at times.   But it’s not because of how he plays golf, it’s because of his growing track record of terrible interactions that people dislike him.

The only thing that really bothered me about him was the “don’t ruin my brand” comment he made to the camera operator. That’s on you bro, not the guy doing his job for way less than you earn. Other than that I find his quirkiness interesting, it’s nice to see some differentiation between the players out there. Makes things more interesting

His swing is not the most aesthetically pleasing thing I have ever seen. I'm not sure how many people he will inspire to swing similarly.

It shouldn't.  His swing works for him and his body.  That's one of the premises of The Golfing Machine.  It does what YOUR body is designed to do.  His swing won't work for anyone else.  However Cobra keeps selling One Length stuff, which is a whole different conversation.  However HIS equipment works for him.

There have been plenty of non-aesthetic swings that were successful...going back to Arnold Palmer and Raymond Floyd, just to name two. It doesn't have to be pretty to be effective.

People dislike him because they have talked about how stupid his one length irons were. People were upset they called him the scientist. Then when his incredible bulk approach worked it backfired on all the people that said all of his tinkering was going to destroy his game. Throw in some quirky actions and there you go. Most of the hate is jealousy and hate for bomb and gouge.

On the flip side, there are tons of super good looking swings that haven't achieved huge levels of success - Adam Scott certainly comes to mind.

Bomb and gouge doesn't work for everyone.  Rory for example, can bomb as he outdrove Bryson for the week, but Rory wasn't strong enough to "gouge" it out of those bad lies in the rough. You just have to take what you have that week and figure it out.

To paraphrase Roger Maltbie from Saturday when asked he said, "I'm not a fan of this style (bomb and gouge) of play in a US Open as opposed to precision and hitting fairways and greens". This seems to be the consensus of the "dislikers". As such it's not just B.A.D. who's playing this way.

 

He's a different cat to say the least but thats not a reason to hate on him (IMHO). Hell it takes all types and I'm really glad it does. It wouldn't hurt his team to get him a PR coach and maybe use Faldo's man crush to their advantage.

 

I personally am intrigued by what he's done in the past 2 years. He's played some really good golf (obviously) and he's also missed cuts. He has dedicated this past year to invoking what he truly believes is a winning formula in golf. And to me that's a really gutsy move. Time will tell if it'll last over the next couple of years or longer. I wish him well.
