Questions about shafts

Since I just got back to golf after a long layoff and when I played I never really paid that much attention to details. I have a lot of questions about shafts because there are just so many. I bought some clubs off ebay that are older. My driver is a TM Ruler 10.5 with a R flex bubble graphite shaft. I picked up a old TM 12 Brassie it has a tour de force graphite 75MPH shaft and a TM titanium 5 wood with a S flex bubble shaft. I also bought a set of Walter Hagen Haig Ultras and they most likely have an S shaft in them as they feel very smooth to me like the head isn't going all over the place like I feel with the driver.

I didn't want to spend a lot at first because I just wanted to go to the range and get some kind of a swing together before I bothered upping the investment. I also felt I needed to look and see what is out there. I learned on blades I feel comfortable with them and I'm actually hitting the haigs pretty well. My issue has always been driving the ball and over all wood play.

I've never played any kind of graphite shafts before and I was wondering what peoples experiences are with these shafts. Is an R flex graphite shaft much like a steel R shaft

What is a steel equivalent to these shaft. When I played my murfields had s black label TT shafts and my Cleveland Byron Nelsons had s400 shafts. And my woods always had steel shafts TT black label or s300 or s400. Even the persimmons I played had those shafts.

Wow, those are some old woods you ended up with.

There has been a lot of development in graphite shafts since the ones you got were made. Basically you can get any stiffness and flex profile you want in graphite now.

My recommendation would be to look for a 2-3 year old driver with a heavier (70g range) shaft as a starting point. It's likely going to be a much better suited to you based on what you are used to.

Yes they are but I like the smaller heads and since I had no idea what's out there now I went with clubs I was sort of familiar with. Here is my dilemma there's so many shafts. Those s400 I played I was 20 years younger and much stronger. Are graphite shafts much lighter than steel? 70g still sounds light. I have no idea what the shafts I have weigh and it seem hard to go to google and ask these questions.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, graphite will be much lighter than steel.

Your typical steel driver shaft was 120g (or so) back in the day but they also played much shorter lengths back then. You can get graphite shafts in the 90g range but they are hard to find and tend to be expensive.

Smaller heads are also pretty much a thing of the past so you may as well bite the bullet on that one.

Yes I noticed that driver heads are huge...I've never hit one. I did notice some put out a "mini" driver.  It's been about 20 years since I played and I've only gone to the range since getting back to it and wanted to ask a lot of questions before making bigger purchases. I'll look into a 70G driver on EBay. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions would just be a guess. There are so many models to choose from.

You want to learn about shafts and how to select one,  this article is a great read and starting point.  It wont tell you what shaft to get specifically but it will tell you HOW to go about looking for a shaft and what you should know before the search begins.

This is the link to the 1st of a 3 part series.
