SIM Driver Warranty - Crown popped off

MillerLowLife

Recommended Posts

Normally had TM drivers in the past and the warranty department with TM has always been stellar with replacements and quick shipment. I moved away from TM driver for the last couple years but decided to come back this year. I've had the SIM for maybe a month or so? Driver sounds and feels great. Been a weird year for my game tho and feel inconsistent with any club in my bag. This driver has a shallower face so probably shouldn't tee it up as high as my old driver but still coming over the top a bit can result in toe hits on the line. I guess enough of these caused the crown to completely pop off. Happened over the weekend on a big golf trip. Four rounds of golf with nothing but a 3 hybrid. It was still fun but couldn't believe how this driver broke. Once I saw the construction and how thin the CF piece is, made a little more sense.

Warranty department is great and sending me a new one but said the latest I'd have a new one is Nov 24th. Chalking this up to covid delays? I've had 2 drivers warranty in the past and it was always super fast.

Not sure if I want to try a new driver once I get the new one or not.

Anyone see this with the new SIM line? Did some quick searches and wasn't pulling up much.

can you take a pic of the back of the Face - Its Speed Injected.  I hope that's not all the injected resin on the bottom, don't know how that could change the CT of the face.

Flash

should it not be there? It was the first thing I noticed and even now, it’s still very stick so I could see it moving in the heat. I was outside for 36 holes in 100 degree weather for a couple days.

The goo in the bottom is not the "speed foam resin" lol just looks like hotmelt to get the headweight right.

Yeah, I found a video of the inside of the head construction. Though it had the speed foam filled to the lined where as this shows low. Guessing that would change head to head?

According to TM, yes it will vary head to head based on just how much resin was required to bring the head back to legal CT limit.

Interesting pics, thanks for sharing that - and sorry about the trouble you're having. Hopefully they will get you a new head ASAP.

And regarding the "speed injection"... on the sticker that comes on the face of a new driver, it says something to the effect of "not all heads require injection"

perfect time to take out the CT dampener and finish the crown with duct tape. Long bomber.

@kmay__ is right, that is just rattle stop/rat glue meant to catch any debris inside the head and likely to finalize final "stock" headweight. The speed injected stuff is hard and contained within the green bracket.

If you play it without the crown it kinda looks like the old Cleveland Hibore

When it happened I certainly wasn't worried TM wouldn't send me a new one. I was more flabbergasted how it broke with the top popping off. Figured it would've happened to someone else before. Had some pretty great hybrid shots over the weekend as a result.

I have a higher swing speed and I'd be lying if I wasn't hoping it would break when I bought it used so I could get a shiny new one. However, with higher SS hits not to the center of the face comes at price.

Carbon crowns have definitely popped off before, and will certainly pop off again. But you're right in that higher swing speeds will definitely be more prone. I almost wonder if the heads on the TM tour van come with the crowns not attached so they can do them by hand to make sure they are perfect. The last thing you would want for your brand image is a slow motion of Rory cranking out a 330yd drive with a crown exploding off the head. ?

I have same exact situation. Thinking about epoxy to fix it myself.

Wasn't uncommon with the last Nike driver, the blue ones. Epoxy was a common fix as well, all depends on how clean the break is I guess.

Vapor Fly? I don't think so.

There were a few threads on this around that time. Unfortunately it seems links from the old site format were lost.

Yeah it wasn't the Vapor Fly, which was all metal body. Vapor Flex 440 has a back half made of composite plastic, and the two halves are joint together with simple tongue and groove and epoxy. Mine came apart after a couple of month, and I noticed that there were a lot of missing epoxy spots.

I tried several different kind of epoxy and the last one I did was JB Weld. I spent a lot of time really cleaning out any remaining epoxy from the grooves, applied plenty of epoxy and let it cure while being held in a vise with very light pressure. Gorilla Clear 5 min epoxy failed in 2 swings. I read good things about Loktite Weld as well.

The fix does seem to be holding, and the club is still a bomber. However I just can't seem to find the confidence in it again fearing that it would come apart on any given swing. Mechanically the face portion needed crossbars like Callaway's jailbreak so the joint can not flex outwards during impact. It's only going to be a matter of time before the epoxy fails. I have since moved onto M1 and then M5.. but I still take the Nike out once in a while just for fun and it is still holding together so far.

Back to the OP's situation. You should be able to glue it back together so sure. From the picture, looks like epoxy wasn't applied all the way around either. I assume the remaining CF looking parts around the rim is epoxy with CF imprint and not actually part of the crown itself being torn off, right? If that's the case, scrap off any remaining epoxy from the rim area so you can get a clean surface. Follow the instruction of whatever epoxy you choose on work time and curing time. Be sure to clean up the excess epoxy within work time and have LIGHT pressure while it's curing. Use epoxy with longer curing time as those seem to be less brittle when cured.

They will replace that if the serial is a retail head....thats a complete failure of the bond between the epoxy & carbon.

Hey all,

I've just had my stealth crown do the exact same thing.

driving range, flush strike out of the middle, makes a weird sound and the crown pops off about 15m ahead.

Unfortunately, I got this off marketplace 10 months ago and never got the receipt, I've checked, and the seller doesn't have it either.

Did anyone have to provide a receipt to TaylorMade for this failure?

Cheers

@Towel, I just got a Sim2 Max fairway wood warrantied and it took less than a week! Just go to an authorized dealer or shop and they can file a warranty claim for you.
