Cutting Hybrid Shafts for Irons?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to replace my steel iron shafts with graphite shafts and I wouldn't mind saving a few bucks.  My golfing game is nothing to speak about so if I ever break 80 I'll get fitted with a nice set of clubs.  But for now, I wouldn't mind keeping costs lower and I like the feel of graphite clubs.

Graphite hybrid shafts seem to be available at very discounted prices.  It has the same 370 tip diameter so the tips will fit and I have the equipment to cut graphite shafts with no problems.  Would cutting hybrid shafts down to iron size be too unpredictable or are hybrid shafts exactly like iron shafts but longer?

Hybrid shafts are usually only meant to go down to a 6 hybrid or something like that so the trick is figuring out how much to cut and what the tip cutting progression should be as you move through the set. Not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, just will need to figure out how much to tip each shaft based on length, loft, and head weight. Definitely will want to pay attention to the parallel tip section of the shaft so you know how much cuttable tip area you have.

The question is how much are you saving on these shafts if this experiment goes off the rails and you end up having to start over? Are the initial savings enough to out weight the potential costs down the road vs. just buying some inexpensive graphite iron shaft?

It’s been done before. If you can figure out how much parallel tip section you are dealing with. You might even have a couple clubs where you’re doing no tipping at all. Then starting a 1/2” tip trimming increase.

there is maybe 4-5 threads going right now on graphite iron shafts. You could try and do a little homework reading up on what’s available. Then post a WTB for graphite iron shaft pulls in the BST.

Try looking into Paderson Kinetixx graphite shafts.  The majority of them do not require tipping only butt cutting to length.  This is based on how they build their shafts.  They are stable and good shafts that most people don't know about.  They have inexpensive graphite shafts on golfworks.  Particularly the Paderson Kinetixx TS line.  I believe they are only $39.99 per shaft.  I actually gamed them this year, but switched to their Ballistic line as that is right in line with what I was fitted for in my fairway and hybrids.  That line of shafts just works for me.

Not trying to turn this into a sales post, but if you want to try this line of shafts on the cheap I have 4 TS graphite shafts with Golf Pride MCC+4 grips that are .370 tip diameter.  They are regular flex however and played 37.5, 37, 36.5, and 36 inches in my Callaway 2019 Big Bertha Irons (7-PW).
