Driver shafts with more "kick" for average speed swing

Recommended Posts

This season I've been playing with different combinations of driver heads and shafts, trying to find that magic balance between accuracy and distance. I own an Epic Flash head in 10.5* and a Rogue Draw head in 9*. The shafts I have include a range of weight and flex, all the same length with Callaway adapters so I can easily try different combinations.

Lately I have favored the Epic Flash head and have played rounds with different shafts. I've had some really good accuracy results on the course but the distance hasn't been there.

Last week I put in the stiff Pro 62 Green shaft that came in my Rogue and noticed that some drives that were hit very solid would fly very high but short. I seems like that shaft has a lot of "kick" that throws the ball up with a lot of energy but too much spin. I kept lowering the loft settings throughout the round but the results weren't all that different. Obviously that wasn't the right combo for me.

It did give me the idea to put that shaft in the lower-lofted Rogue head and take it for a spin. I used that combination in a scramble yesterday and man, I was really happy with the speed of the ball and the flight I was getting. I was playing along side several better drivers and we ended up using my tee ball on several holes which normally doesn't happen (I'm usually the guy who hits them straight but short so the other guys can unleash one).

It seems like for me at least that a lower-lofted head and a shaft with some kick/spin gives me better launch conditions than some other combos. I may be misreading this limited data set so please help me understand if I might be missing something.

I definitely plan to get fitted for a driver next season. This season has been for honing my swing and trying to gain accuracy and distance off the tee. I want to continue that process before I pay for a brand new fit-to-me driver combo.

Compare the weights of the two heads.  There might be a differences there that could be contributing to the different results.   Both with respect to the swing weight of the club and how the stiffness of the shaft might be effected.

Also should check if the playing length is the same in both heads with the same shaft.   Sometimes BBGM of the heads can differ.   If they are different probably not more than 1/4" - but some times that can be enough.

Interesting, will check it out. A little googling reveals that the Epic Flash head might weigh as much as 50g less than the Rogue Draw head. I wouldn't have expected that. I'll get out our food scale and compare the two heads I have.

I'm not sure I'd trust your source, 50 gm is highly unlikely.
