who is your favorite Tour pro and why ?

Fairway14

Recommended Posts

These days I am rooting for Tom Hoge, a guy who has played on the regular Tour now for about 5 years. His status is more or less "middle of the pack" but I like his golf swing and style of play. Hoge has no regular Tour wins , but I expect his game is good enough to get a victory within the next year or two. I enjoy watching a player get his first win , so I usually am rooting for a player to get his/her first.

Who is your current favorite Tour player and why ?

I used to really like Steve Marino a lot. He seemed like a cool, laid-back dude, and I liked his home-grown swing.  Kind of wondering what's become of him after all those injuries he dealt with.

I've seen him at a few of the Korn Ferry tournaments I've covered this year.

Jordan Spieth

His game unfortunately resembles my own TOO much.  So my opportunities to watch him are few and far apart.  And never Sat/Sun.

For me, it would have to be Roy McAvoy.  His 62 to make the cut at the US Open was nothing short of amazing and the way he gave Jacobson and Simms a run for their money was beautiful to watch.  Had he layed up on the 18th hole, he would have had a real shot to win it all or at least force a playoff with Jacobson.

Tiger - the GOAT,

Bryson - defying convention,

Xander - ...I just like his game and demeanor for some reason.

It changes but right now it's 1) Bryson and 2) a somewhat distant wolff. They both share they're own unique style, but Bryson is more experienced and mentally stronger...wolff post interview went thru a list of bad breaks he think he had as the reason he didn't win.

In terms of others im interested it's more established players like DJ, Rory, Fowler and others because I'm curious to see how they might adapt to the way Bryson and wolff are approaching the game. They're already starting to ponder it, but if Bryson in particular continues with his his success this year (especially a master's win) they'll have no choice but to adapt....just like a whole generation of players had to adapt to Tiger.

I hate to be a Tiger homer but I really like and enjoy dominance is sports. I know times are definitely in the rear view. I love the "vs. the field" type of guys. I think it is great for the game when you have those types of players. It really rallies interest to the sport when you have an all time great competing. People watched cycling to watch Armstrong, they tune in when there is a chance for a Triple Crown winner, Federer, Tiger, all are great for their respective sports. It is a little harder in team sports but the Steelers of the 70's, Niners of the 80's, the 90's Cowboys all left their marks as well.

That is why I didn't like the post-Jack/pre-Tiger era. A lot of good players but none that were transcendent. I think we are in the same period now.

It'll always be Freddie Couples for me. He was in his prime when I was around 12 years old or so and golf was becoming kinda the only thing I cared about. Not to detract from any of the great players of the late 80s/early 90s era but none of them were particularly cool - except Fred. And man, that swing.

I dig JT these days for the same reason. The kid just seems to be having a blast living his dream life and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

All time-Jack and Watson

i really liked Payne Stewart back in the day, loved his swing. Freddie was fun to watch as well but I was always frustrated with his lack of drive. He should have won more.
I also have greatly enjoyed watching Tiger and Phil over the years, as for the young guys, I am hoping JS can make a comeback. I am a sucker for a guy with a good short game.

European player: Justin Rose.  Every PGA event I've attended  and would shout out "Nice shot, Rosey!"  "Go get em, Rosey!" he would always turn, look you in the eye, and acknowledge with a wave or tip of the cap.  He did to every fan.  American: Gary Woodland.   I just like his stoic, no nonsense demeanor on the course.  If I could be a tour pro I would probably want to emulate his body language and composure on the course.  International: Adam Scott.  That swing, though!  Enough said.  Honorable mention: Collin Morikawa.  Pure ballstriker and seems like a nice kid with a good head on his shoulders.

I have none on the PGA Tour but for the last 30 years  my favorite has been Russ Cochran.  I attended a practice round 1991 PGA at Crooked Stick(won by John Daly) and Cochran overheard me telling  another person in the gallery that I was videoing Russ because played left handed and wanted to study his swing.  He turned and said to me   "You play lefty?"  I answered I did.  He said "well get out here on this tee. I have three drivers in the bag and need your opinion on which I should play this week."  He handed me a Taylor Made Pittsburgh Persimmon, a ball and tee.  I hit the ball and hit it good(for me).  He asked what I thought.  I told him I never liked Taylor made.  And I hit it in the rough.  He said, "You hit it great.  Just remember you don't hit in front of galleries and you are wearing those 'tightass' shorts!"   What a thrill..   But the best is yet to come.

He had won the Western Open in month prior,  July 1991.  So in 1993 I decided to drive to Lemont, IL  to watch him in the Western Open.  As he was walking from the driving range to putting green I yelled to him, "Hey, Mr Cochran!".  He turned and yelled back,  "Crooked Stick, right!?"   Boy I was tickled.   Later at the SR PGA  at French Lick  I walked the along and talked with his wife and son.  All are so down to  Earth  and friendly.  A breath of fresh air!!

Great story !

I don't dislike the individuals who are bland money machines but hate how secure a PGA card is for some. I would like to see a much bigger turnover of players each week. Instead of a guaranteed tour card, each tournament has it's exemptions based on world rankings, past wins etc, and then 40 or 50 can Monday qualify each week.
