Pinehurst winter months

Yes - they have better rates in the winter though now what you're seeing at Kiawah.  They're busier than you'd expect from what I've seen.

That is surprising. If the deals aren't great I don't know why you wouldn't just go in peak weather months. I'll do a little more research into it though and see what I can find. Thanks

Does Pinehurst ever discount their prices? I find it hard to believe the courses are packed December-Feb when the highs are in the 50s (average). I go to Kiawah every year with their winter deal, but have never heard anything about Pinehurst (specifically #2).

Lodging is significantly cheaper though.

MidPines/Pine Needles often have very good winter prices.

I'm actually surprised that Kiawah doesn't raise their rates on their winter deal.  They'd surely remain booked while charging more.

It is the best deal in golf. I've gone the last 4 Novembers, it is too good to pass up.

#2 ive played for 275, #4 for 225. Mid Pines and Pine Needles are like 95 i think. I played TR for like 60 last December.

I go every year at Thanksgiving.  Conditions are usually very good, although courses that overseed can be a little soggy.  Prices are very reasonable, and you can get in the restaurants you want a lot easier than in May or September.

If I go it is going to be last minute. Going to keep an eye on the weather and if I see a day or 2 that are nice I am going to book a flight down and play. Main goal is to just play #2 for now. Depending on how long I go I may play another course or 2 (Tobacco Rd is intriguing). When and which courses overseed?

Besides the bermuda getting dormant and what not i would say they are usually in good condition.

I'm pretty sure Mid Pines and Pine Needles overseed, I'm pretty sure the Pinehurst courses do not.  Talamore and Mid South do not.  A number of the courses actually use paint to make fairways green, and I've read that pain can be a healthier option than overseeding.  As for greens, the miniature Bermuda strains seem to go dormant, but remain really smooth and maybe even faster than they are when the grass is actively growing.  Dormant Bermuda rough is MUCH easier to play from than when its actively growing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some additional info - I played Southern Pines last week and it looked like they had started to overseed as well... Pine Needles and Mid Pines over seed the fairways and then paint the Bermuda Greens when they go dormant - SP greens are Bent and generally better in fall winter spring than in summer.

Generally you can find sub $100 rates at PN and MP and $40 at SP in the winter months...
