What Driver Are You Playing and Why?

Recommended Posts

Titleist 917D2 9.5* with the Aldila X-Torsion Copper 60TX - the best shaft I've played ever without question, and the 917 is solid, too. I can make solid swings and it goes - really been happy with this combo for the last few years. I'm able to keep it in play and help capitalize on the rest of my game, going to a plus-cap for the first time ever (officially).

Recently made the switch from an M5 Tour head which I played for a little over a year. The smaller head size suits my eye for some reason. I can shape the ball really well with the TS4 whereas with the M5 sometimes it had to go into timeout.

Nike VR Pro LE 10.5° with Aldila Rip Phenom 70S.

Played this for about 5 years, and it was the best driver I've ever owned.

But last year, when I decided to start fading the ball, I found it just ballooned and didn't give me enough distance. Spent all summer trying to make a Bridgestone Tour B XD-7 work, but just was not consistent at all.

Midsummer, I made a swing change and went back to hitting a draw. Put the Nike back in the back, and I was instantly back in the fairway, and still as long as my playing partners.

Bottom line, the VR Pro LE is the easiest to hit driver I've ever owned, and super easy to work both ways. It just goes where I aim it.

Well I just developed a nice crack along the sole of my Superquad TP that had an original Grafalloy Blue 65-X in it so in addition to my quest for a new favorite shaft, I now have to search for a new favorite driver head for it ?

IMG_20200915_180027.jpg

Just pull that Grafalloy blue and send it my way!!! Or just put it in a new driver. I've got one in both my woods. They hang with modern shafts without question.

PXG Proto X+ with Diamana S+ Shaft.  I’m a fan of PXG, the current prices are better than other brands for the drivers, and it outperformed my R7 460 by almost 20 yds with better dispersion.

I was fit for a Sim Max with a Ventus  Blue but I didn’t like how it felt off the face and I didn’t like the price.

Been playing a 917 8.5 with a GD 7x BB after my 910 driver face cracked. For whatever reason I have never felt that the ball jumps off the face. Im not losing distance compared to other brands just saying its a weird feeling. I probably will be switching to Pings new driver, just waiting to get in for a fitting for it.

What driver? Taylormade Original One Mini 11.5 and 13.5 backup. Stock Diamana F shafts.

Why? Because golf is more fun from the fairway.

When I pull the head cover off the M2 where it now sits in the bag of shame, it looks like something that should be in porn - bulbous and vulgar.

I still play a TI Sldr Mini as my 3w snd hit it further than most guys drives.

Not so easy for me off the deck but when I need to be surgical I pull out the Mini.

Have 3x now hahaha

Another G400 Max guy here. I play it at 44.5" with the Ping Tour 65 stiff shaft. I had the same combo with the Ping G that I liked and just swapped out the head after a good BST deal. A bit longer than the G and just as forgiving, if not more.

See no reason to change anytime soon. Maybe in a couple years when the G425 has come down in price.

Epic Flash 9.5 standard loft and face angle.  Original Epic Hzrdous regular shaft.  I love this driver and it will be in my bag for a long time.  It's been hard to find a driver after my TM R1 but this Epic driver is gold. Long and extremely forgiving.  I can hit a straight higher shot or my usual draw effortlessly.  A note on the heely shots: it's the first driver I've ever had that doesn't miss so much distance when I hit with the heel, even the way it corrects the ball flight is amazing.  This driver is a powerful fairway finder for me.

I am playing a PING G400 MAX w PING Tour 65s shaft. It is the first driver in 9 years to get the PING G20 w GD DJ-6s out of the bag. Not in love with the PING Tour shaft as the profile feels so much different from the DJ-6, but the results have been good enough not to mess with it. Been thinking about pulling the DJ from the G20 and put a tip on it and give it a run in the MAX, but hate to ruin a great combo in the G20.

Same here.  Hitting 5 or 10 balls on each at a fitting doesn't tell you much, unless you are pro-level repeatable with your swing.  Could be just a few good swings for most of us!   Buying/testing/selling isn't practical for those w/o cash to burn. How the heck do you know?  Everything is good: is it simply shaft selection? there must be 100 good shafts on the market: surely there aren't 100 different types of swings and swing speeds?  10 combos, maybe...

Does the existence of such a mess of drivers/shafts make people think they will find some holy grail?   for the rest of us, how do we just find something that works?  Example: I borrowed 2 drivers recently: a M5 Tour w/some sort of banana yellow X shaft, and a 917 D3 with a Diamana D+ limited 70g TX.  I hit 2 bomber drives with each.  I found trouble twice with each.  Neither trouble issue had anything to do with driver.  Of course, the 917 D3 is reputed to be "shorter" than the M5, yet the 2 drives I hit well with it, I destroyed.  Was it the head, shaft, length, or my swing?  Random chance? Luck?

I was walking around at my favorite Pro shop in Scottsdale,AZ and saw Cally Mavrik driver head in used clubs for sale racks and pulled it out. Behold! It’ shaft is Graphite Design AD Tour IZ 6s. I looked at the sticker cost only 350.00 so grabbed it and bought it for 300.00!  It kicked my trusty Rogue Draw with Tensei AV Blue 75 stiff out of my bag. Played golf yesterday and shot 85 at tough and long course. This driver has put me where I am closer the the hole more than in the past! I am so happy that I found a mother load driver haha. Happy Golfing ??

@Phil MajorI play the Rogue but this 60 year old could use some more distance.  How much closer to the hole did the Mavrik get you?

i have a thing for ping drivers.   my current is the 410+. with a mitsubishi tensi orange in it.  the heavy head with the counterballanced shaft was easy to love as i can, when the ocasion arrives, go after it a bit faster without fear.  playing a course up in pa (whitetail is worth a visit if it's within your range) the other day with some freinds and after they talked me into it i went after one on a 330 par four.  ended up abot five feet from the hole and made the putt, yes a few good bounces were in play.

Mavrik has more speed than Rogue and the shaft is part of reason for ten yards or more too.

Ping G410 plus. During my fitting it was easily the best performer for my swing. I’m 6”5 with a wirey build. My swing speed was between 110 and 117 during my fitting. The ball was consistently rolling out between 310 to 330. My previous driver was the callaway rogue sz. The ping is slightly longer and way more forgiving. I’ll be using it for at least 3 years. It’s a beast!!
