Effect of a lighter shaft with the same swing weight

If I change the 65 gram shaft in my fairway wood with 45 gram replacement and adjust the head weights so the swing weight is the same for both, what is the effect?

A club that has a static weight of 20g less. Assuming the shafts have a similar balance point, you likely won't be adjusting much to "match" swingweight, but the overall club will obviously be lighter. Normally in cases like this you will want to add head weight and increase the swingweight to match a similar kind of feel you had before. For example, if the wood with the 65g shaft measured D2, you might find yourself somewhere between D4-D6 with the 45g shaft to match a similar feeling of "heft". However, if you WANT a lighter feel, then you may not want to do anything, it all has to do with what you're looking for.

Better question might be, what are you hoping to accomplish with going that light. 45g is as light as you could ever get with a fairway wood. Are you looking for more speed, height, something else?

My bad.  I'm looking something that might be easier to swing = less load on my joints since I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery and will be hesitant to swing hard for fear of reinjuring myself.

Less load on the shoulder is good if you think you can control swinging a shaft that light. If it makes you transition harder and attempt to swing faster it might hurt the shoulder more than it helps. I have a bum shoulder, I feel pain and sting swinging lightweight drivers and woods.

Everyone is different, so it may not b e the same for you.  But I'm not sure that's going to make much difference to your shoulder.   I just went through shoulder surgery last year although it wasn't rotator cuff.  It was a bicep tendon repair and debridement in my lead shoulder.   Lost a ton of swing speed and shaft weight didn't make any difference.  I could swap out a 49 gm shaft and a 68 gm shaft in my driver and see no difference in how much stress or pain or even what swing speed I got out of it.

Personally, if there really is still a chance of re-injuring it, I'd just stay away from the driver until you think the shoulder is really ready for it.  This is not something you want to rush.  Start with the wedges and maybe mid-irons.  Only move up when you're more confident that re-injury isn't a possibility.

There is a pinned thread at the top of this forum that discusses how swingweight is affected by different club elements...

One wild card in this discussion is the shaft balance point.  A low balance point shaft will swighweight higher than a high balance point shaft of the same weight.

Use what feels good/OK for your shoulder first and foremost. (Best of luck with the healing.)

Adding more weight will accomplish loading the shaft more.

So if you needed just a little higher height to your shot, add more weight.

You don't have to "match" the swingweight to any of your other clubs if you don't want to. Adding more head weight will just start to "un-do" the lightening up with the shaft change. A little is no big deal, but I wouldn't "chase" a certain swingweight value and end up making the shaft a loose noodle in the process.

Good advice here, thank you everyone.  I had 3 of the 4 rotator tendons torn as well as damage to the biceps tendon and a bone spur that all had to be repaired.  It was likely compromised for quite a while, but one driver swing was excruciatingly painful that caused the most damage.
