Original Flightscope X2 charging problem

I have an original X2 that works perfectly other than I cannot get it to charge so that I can take it to the range.  

 

It seems to think it is still connected to the iPad but the iPad is dead and not running.  

 

I follow the instructions as to the set up, disconnect any devices, turn on machine, plug in charger etc.  But the charging light does not flash orange (charging mode).  Yet the status and connected flash blue.  

 

HMMM.  as I was typing this, the charging light started flashing orange as it is suppose to.  

This is not the first time it has failed to charge so I just used it for indoor use but with the nice weather, I thought I'd try it again.  

Any ideas as to what the intermittent problem is?

I had to replace the rechargeable batteries in mine last year.  No amber light, if I recall...couldn't make it charge.  New batteries solved it and it's been fine ever since.
