Taylormade P790 (2019) v Mizuno MP20 HMB

Hi all,

Been along time since I have been on the forums. Mainly because I got such great feedback I ended up spending loads of momey!

Anyway I am now comfortably playing off 9 with 2 kids don't get to practice enough so quite happy to just enjoy my golf.

I am currently playing the JPX919 Hot Metal with dynamic gold 120 stiff shafts and have been very good to me.

When the JPX921 were released I was really interested in looking into changing my irons. I booked a fitting but the numbers on the jpx 921 were not worth changing.

No real difference.

The big difference was I had picked up 3mph club speed and now sit at 90mph.

I had complained that I would like a lower ball flight.

The fitter is a friend of mine and said he could give me a heavier shaft or an x stiff to lower my ball flight as I hit my 7 irons 100ft on average.

That might be ok in some climates but not Ireland where we have soft greens (rain) and lots of wind. He told me to try a slight technique change and come back in two weeks. (Ball further back, steeper AoA).

Before I left I hit the P790 (2019) and they were lovely, no drop in distance to my HM.

Since the fitting I have been looking into the Mizuno HMB. I didn't realise they are actually a bigger blade than the P790, possibly easier to hit?

I really don't want to give up distance (ego ?) so the 32 degree 7 iron in the HMB won't travel as far.

Could I strengthen the lofts on all the HMB to match the P790? ( 2 degrees)

Anybody any real feedback on the HMB v P790?

My playing partner plays the P790 and I took them for a full round yesterday and they were easy to hit, no real expectations of problems going from a SGI to a player's iron.

I would the HMB's as they are stunning looking clubs!!!

Anyway sorry for the long post, hope your all well !

I am currently gaming a combo set of JPX 919 forged in 4-6 irons and MP20 HMB in 8-PW.  It is a little unique to combo them, but they actually blend well. The HMB are 1-2 degree's stronger lofted and the 6 in the 919F is 1 degree stronger. The fitter did it so all the distances were spot on. I would not worry about strengthening the lofts on the HMB. They still fly high when I need them too, spin great and go far.

One of the guys in my group (off 16) plays 790s and I went and gave them ago as soon as due for a new set.

Found that similar to the Kings, they go a long way, but the dispersion front to back was vast and is a point made by some on this forum (although there's heaps of good reviews and look at where they post on 'top irons'.

Then I tried the HMBs and haven't looked back, had to trust the machine on dispersion; yes didn't go as far as the P790s, but 7iron was consistently as far as i want/need with much more height+backspin.  First time i had them on the course and set a PB (scratch front nine) - feel so confident standing over them.

Guess you'll have to try them both at the same time.  Also note that some are saying the 921 Forged is similar to the HMB (certainly same loft/offset), and topline/sole look close, yes 921 apparently goes further? The HMB kills it with looks and are some suggsting the 790 might be on run out soon?

I think the better comparison is the MP-20 HMB's and the new P770's. I've hit them both and they were very similar in performance. Slight edge in feel to the HMB's. Also, completely agree with the above - the P790's are a more forgiving club, but with the potential of a "jumper" that goes an extra 10 yards or so.
