Long courses

Recommended Posts

played yesterday with a coworker his buddy and my wife.  The three of them played better ball against me.  I decided to play the tips at 7425 yards just for the experience. Man that was a slog.  All par 5s were 580 plus one at 620 into the wind.  One par 3 was 240 but thankfully down wind.  On top of that the wind was blowing and the flags were bent over.

The length and wind got the best of me.  Everything was reachable and I didn't have an approach over 200, average around 150 to 170.  Thankfully the rough was very low.  Its unbelievable how good those guys are on tour playing that distance in the US open with crazy rough.  7000 yards isn't too bad for me but that extra 400 makes a big difference.

My putter and short game failed me and I posted a big number but my differential was only 6 which I was happy with given the rating of 76.1.

Back to reality and my comfort zone I guess.  My hats off to anyone that can score from that distance.

Where? What altitude? I have played a 7,400 yard course at sea level and it was crazy long. I have played a 7,400 yard course at almost one mile above sea level and it played much, much, shorter. In fact it played very similar to a 6,700 yard course at sea level.

I agree, those guys are GOOD!

Grand niagara in Ontario.  About 100m or 300ft elevation.   It was funny when I was on the 240 par 3 hitting a 3  iron thinking those guys could be hitting 5 or 6 iron.  For the record I fatted it, came up 20 yards short, chucked the wedge. Managed to win the hole with a bogie.  The wife was pissed she lost.

Im quite sure had there been round i would have added several strokes.

I really enjoy playing the longer tracks. I play off a 2 HCP or around there, and a lot of the guys I play with are a ton better than I am. I would consider myself "above average" in distance off the tee, and they still blow it by me. Do I have any business playing from 7200+ yards? Probably not, but it seems like the courses I play open up from back there. Honestly I tend to struggle on the par 5's a bit more than I normally would, but I'm a weirdo who REALLY enjoys a long par 4 (450+++).

And quite honestly, when I do play from a shorter tee, my score doesn't change as much because I suck on par 3's no matter the yardage. Lol.

It's a great thing to do every once in a while to expose parts of your game. The same could be said from playing a random 9 holes from the front tees. Always good to switch it up.

Typically on long course, the extra length can be felt on the par 3's. Imagine being on the tee box 240 out and these guys are pulling 5 irons. Definitely a different game for sure. But kudos to you for playing it. I love playing from the tips. Hey if you want to feel what it feels like to have 5 iron out rather than your 8 or Pw, take it to the tips on a 7000 plus yard course. Kinda humbles you but also reminds you how important it is to be able and use your whole bag. I actually felt the opposite on a shorter course where I didnt need to play drive all day but position long irons. Love it when I get to use my full arsenal of clubs.

I rather enjoy the long courses. Saadiyat Beach GC in Abu Dhabi plays at 7900 yards at sea level and I absolutely love the challenge. Usually courses that long will give you room off the tee box but I am also a long hitter and can still get home on par 5's that are over 600 yards and have an answer for 240 yard par 3's which is a must. I prefer not to play long courses from the tips in windy conditions but I have never played a course that was so long that it felt like a chore to play.

This is why you should play tees correct for you. The course I grew up playing is nearly 7200 yards but my longest approach into a par 4 is typically a 6 or 7 iron. You aren't meant to have short iron into every hole, but you also aren't meant to have a mid or long iron into every hole. Personally I love playing big golf courses as it's a different challenge.

I have a 260 yard driver (245 carry) on a good day and played Royal St. George's from the Open tees at 7,204 yards par 70. I was lucky in that the two longest par 3's were playing up at 215 and 195 instead of 242 and 239, so the course actually played something like 7,130.

Very calm day and the bouncy links turf gave me plenty of roll. I only felt ridiculously overmatched on the 495 yard par 4's 4th and 15th, otherwise nothing too crazy. Since I rarely play anything more than 6,800 yards it was definitely a step up, but not an extremely unmanageable one.

Best round i've ever played all things considered for me was on a beast of a track that day

I played "Le Diable" which is a Quebec mountain course, and one of the top 100 courses in Canada, on a day where it was 5C and we got some light snow. This was in October. I shot 1-over 72 playing the tips at 7100yds. I think i hit 3-wood into at least 3 par 4's

I am not a long hitter, but I generally play longer courses better. I'm not talking crazy long, but 7,000-7200 and I typically play well.

Overall, I theorize that there are two reasons for this.

First, I've always hit the top end of the bag better than the low. I'd rather have a 5 iron in my hand than a PW any day of the week. Part of this may be my naturally flat swing, but I think a lot of it has to do with my second reason.

Second, on shorter courses I tend to get really narrowly focused on targets. Instead of trying to hit a solid shot towards the center of the green or fairway, I try to get cute. I put too much pressure on myself to hit perfect shots, and don't just let it happen. With 125 to the green, I think I am going to "make" a bridie happen. With 195 in, I'm just happy to hit the green and birdies just come.

It also helps that other players tend to play these courses poorly. It makes my mediocre performance seem better than it actually is.

I get fits when I playing from the shorter length sometimes.  When I’m using wedges from 75 yards to 110 yards I’m still a bit lost.   I rather have a full shot    Of course I rather have full 9i than full 5 iron   On shorter courses I try to lay up     with something less than driver
Still like use driver from the tee. So generally I find 6400 -7000 yards is good for me. I use all my clubs

I just don't hit it as far as I used to and usually play one up from the tips or 6500 give or take a couple hundred. The good thing about going long as a lot less decision making having to hit driver almost always. The big difference to me is those really long par 3s and all the par 5s are just unreachable. What is the fun in that?

If you have 150-170 into avg par 4 then you are doing ok at that tee.
