Most Durable Premium / Tour Golf Ball?

Alright, I have this odd behavior where I refuse to play used/found golf balls when I’m playing. Given that preference I really feel like if any of the premium golf balls was head and shoulders above the rest in terms of durability, I’d instantly game it. It seems like the tour caliber balls are all really solid in terms of performance these days, so I’d rather just play something that’s going to hold up a bit better.

 

What premium balls have been the most durable for you this year? I’m specifically interested in current generation balls.

I don't experiment with golf balls, but I have to say that I can't imagine a urethane golf ball being more durable than a ProV1 or ProV1x.  I generally feel a lot better about how much they cost me when I see how the finish holds up; unless I hit a cart path (and sometimes even when I do!)  they just seem indestructible. 

 

FWIW, I like to put a new ball in play on the first tee even of casual rounds.  I sometimes have trouble with the ProV1's in my bag determining which ones are the new ones and which ones have already gone 18 holes, if not more.

I've had the best luck with Pro v1/x in terms of durability. The only times I've seen meaningful scuffs where from contact with trees or the cart path. I can pretty easily get 18-27 holes worth of play out of a ball before it gets retired to the chipping bucket. In contrast, I was swapping out Bridgestones every 4-5 holes when I gave those a run. After every bunker shot or long pitch it seemed like there would be a sizable scuff or groove marks.

I'm sure everyone will have different answers as ball performance is fairly similar on a very high level. 

 

That being said i've consistently been disappointed with Chrome Softs. I love the ball i just always feel like they are scuffed almost immediately. As soon as i take a brand new one out of the box i feel like i could scuff it just by looking at it . The Chrome Soft X has been better for me i just don't like that ball as much

 

The Srixon Z star for my money is awesome. For one here it's 15$ cheaper than the other premium balls. And i have used one for 2-3 rounds on a few different occasions and still had it looking nice. 

 

pro V's are probably in the middle for me. I don't have a lot of experience with the new TP5's

In the past, I think Srixon ZStars and ZStar XV USED to be the best in terms of durability, but that has changed with the most recent version. It seems to develop a crack on the seam that I've seen in balls played by my friend who has used the ball exclusively for the past few years. I've seen some similar complaints by users here. I think @J13 has posted some pictures of the same issue.

Thanks for the input guys. Maybe I just go back to the ProV1, it's a great ball. Just wish it wasn't so expensive...

I have use the new Zstar all season , probably 50+ rounds now. I definitely know what you mean (at least i think)...there seems to be these "marks" i'll call them that go along the seams. However in my experience they don't seem to change the surface of the ball, like it's not a scuff and doesn't seem to affect performance in any way. 

 

A ball like the Chrome Soft for me, it would actually develop the more abrasive little cuts and scuffs. 

 

The Zstar doesnt seem as bad for that

Yeah, you are probably right. My friend is sensitive to it and always pulls the ball out of play when it happens. I'm not sure it impacts performance or not but I don't know one way or the other. I've played ProV1 and its plenty durable for me but I probably lose them faster than most at my handicap level 🙂

You can't go wrong with the Pro V1 BUT as I'm the type of guy that likes to get the most ball for my money, it is usually used TM Pentas/Lethals/Tour Preferred/TP5.  Their durability rivals that of Titleist as I have yet to scuff one.

I think all urethane balls are the same..  Because of very thin layer.  

 

Avoid wedges and cart path.. you'll be fine..

Hands down the Srixons are the most durable. I play Prov1s and they arent even close in terms of durability to a Srixon.

The new Wilson Staff ball is the most durable ball I've ever played.

I don’t have enough experience with a wide variety of balls to draw any conclusions, but I can say I just played 36 holes with one Snell MTB-X and it was in great shape afterward. I hit this ball into a tree and into a few bunkers over those 36 holes. I finally wound up with a couple very minor scuffs by the end, but I was very pleasantly surprised how well it held up.

I also don't like to play found balls, especially if they have sharpie markings on them.  Similar to above, I've found Snell (and Vice) to be excellent balls, and it's not nearly as painful pulling one out of play since they cost a lot less than ProV1, etc.  I haven't played my new favorite (Vice Pro) long enough to have a good feel for durability, but there's no evidence yet that I can't play a ball for 18 holes or more (assuming I don't lose it!).

Srixon Z XV. These things are crazy durable. One time I was playing in a golf trip and I grabbed a ball from the sleeve and played two rounds with and It still looked new. Unless you hit from bunkers much or the occasional CPA they hardly mark up at all.
