Iron head recommendations

I’m building a mixed set of Titleist 716 CB/MBs 4i-PW. They’ll be built with PX 6.0 in them but I’m thinking of only having the 5i-Pw be in the CB/MBs and wanting an easier 4iron head, like a more forgiving 4-iron head or even a U500 or GAPR.  Making this thread strictly for everyone’s advice, opinions, and thoughts.

Drvr: TSi3 9* 60g Hzrdus Smoke Green 6.5
Fwy: TSi3 15* 75g Hzrdus Green 6.5
Fwy: TS2. (16.5) 18* Tensei Orange 75x
Irons: Titleist 716 CB/MB (4-6 cb, 7-9mb Project X 6.0)
Wedges: Vokey SM 46*, 50*, 54*, 58*, & 62*,  (Project X 6.0) (setup based on course)

Putter(s): TM Spider-X 35” KBS (SS Pistol Tour 2.0) Mizuno M-Craft 35” (blackedout)

Balls: Pro V1x Left Dash (spring/summer), Avx (winter)

Play whatever provided you with the most confidence.  Long irons are some of the more difficult clubs in the bag to hit so if you feel a utility iron or even a hybrid give you a better chance at success then by all means give one a try.  Worst thing that can happen is you don't like it in which case just sell it and try something else.

@Nessism I’m right now leaning on a 3iron GAPR Lo with a loft setting of 20.5*...making it a club in between the yardages of the 3 & 4 for me. Thank you for your input!

Obviously YMMV, but if it was me thinking about replacing a 4i in a 4-W MB/CB combo set I'd lean more towards something like an AP1 (to match your 716s) or T300 or 400 if you want something brand new.

A GAPR or a U500 or something else along those lines strikes me as more of a standalone driving iron, rather than a long iron replacement.  But maybe that's what you're going for?

It's a bit of a funny spot in the bag, isn't it?  In my experience it's kind of the last one to get right.  Like you can work from driver down and lob wedge up, then they meet somewhere around 5 wood or 7 wood or 2 hybrid or 3 hybrid or driving iron or long iron.  Been struggling with it a little myself lately, and--much more so than the very top or bottom of the bag--it really varies from course to course.  Tight off the tee, vs reachable par 5s vs long par 3s, etc.

Clearly the right answer here is to buy a bunch of different clubs, lol.

@jmckyou couldn’t have “struck the ball more down the middle” than you did in your response. Before building this set, my gamers were 710s and I had absolutely no issue hitting PW up to 5iron. My issue was always the 3 and 4irons, however I can PIPE a old 2iron Rescue Mid with no sweat. I don’t necessarily NEED a 3iron so I didn’t even consider it in the CB/MB set. However the 4iron will be part of the rotation, just want to make it easier to hit.

what you suggested in the AP1s certainly crossed my mind as well as the CNCPT line as well. The U510 (if I’m picturing it right in my mind) had TOO MUCH sticking out behind the top-line for my liking. The GAPR certainly looked better physically.

With my irons I found the 4 iron was iffy off the fairway. The heads have parallel tips, so I had it refitted with a hybrid shaft. About 16 grams lighter than my steel shafts, really helps with launch. I use it mainly as a driving iron.

You're just now putting your set together, so you have more flexibility in what to do. Those with clubs in hand, a lighter or softstepped shaft in the 4i may be all you need.

Next season I may go back to four wedges, maybe bend the 48* to 50* and add the set PW. To limit myself to 14 clubs, I'd make a pre-round choice on whether to carry the 4i or 4H. The 4i great for tight par 4 holes, while the 4H is more versatile if the course isn't too narrow.

@ChipNRunyou sound EXACTLY like my brain right now bc I have about 6 - 8 various Vokey wedges ranging up the scale from 48* to 64* and will make the substitutes just like you would..one less iron somewhere for one wedge variation.

great points in your post!
