I get the whole pace of play and still being able to play in a respectable time but if you arent hitting it out of bounds or requiring a second ball, play your ball or hit it better. The whole taking mulligans until you hit a good one doesnt make sense at all to me.

I used to be more militant again Mulligans, fluffing the ball etc., but now I don't care. Most of my golf is played with guys that don't hit mulligans, don't fluff etc. In fact in one round I saw more mulligans than in the last few years. 😀

When I do play with someone like that as long as they keep pace and don't interfere with other peoples enjoy of the game, I don't care. 17 times was a bit extreme even for me though.

I’d much rather have a guy take 17 mulligans and play semi-quickly versus spending my tournament Sunday round listening to too loud classic rock from the cart of my FC’s.

I would not do this either.  If they ask I politely say "no".  If they don't ask I politely ask them to turn it down.  If they don't ...see YA later! No excuse to play music loudly enough that it bothers anyone that does not want to hear it!

Yes this is the nice thing about being in a club, things tend to be a bit more cordial over all. The flip side can be a bit true too, as frequent poor interactions can boil over.

Surely he was getting in his practice round before the mid am

He should learn from a couple young guys we joined up with on the back 9 last weekend. They warned us they "weren't very good" but it was slow anyway so not big deal. On the 12th tee one of them smother-chunked his tee shot into a group of trees. He started to hit another ball but then proclaimed, "wait I can see it. That's the rule, if you can see it you don't get to hit another one". 😁

Well, it is a good guideline for good pace of play but it is not a Rule. You are always allowed to hit a new one. Always.

I might have given him a "you know this isn't the driving range..." if we were holding up play or something, but generally I will let the mulligan thing go. I do really hate it from the fairway, however.

In general, as a golfer, I find mulligans offensive. Why not give yourself the opportunity to scramble for par? The mulligan robs you of one of the most fun and creative sides of the game.

Mostly because at my skill level, I get the opportunity to scramble for par 10+ times a round anyway. Sitting 110 out in the center of the fairway and skulling a wedge into the woods behind the green, into the divot you took from the same spot in the woods yesterday, it's awful tempting to drop another.

Or on a 580 yard par 5 you hit a 100 yard cold-top into wedge-out weeds and youre thinking "great I'm lying 2 and still 400 yards from the hole" Not that I can't play for 6 and go 3 wood, hybrid, wedge, and try to jar the putt, but in a round I don't care about why not put a drive out where you know you're capable of.

I don't take mulligans very often, but I don't have anything against those who do. Not sure about 17 such mulligans, but if we kept pace I wouldn't mind.

Funny you should mention that. I was lucky enough to get paired with another guy this past weekend who may not have re-teed on 17 holes, but was probably well into double digits. Of course he wasn't really hitting "mulligans" but provisional and 3rd shots. That's what happens when your stock shot appears to be a 30 yard draw and you play a really tight, tree lined course.

At my club we must keep handicaps and post all rounds within the given dates (no posting in winter).  We don't take mulligans as the mentality is "keep the handicap up" (plus we want to post true scores). The only thing we allow is hitting a second ball on the first tee to get your swing going, but you have to play the first ball (unless lost).

What type of mulligans are these?  (how bad were the first shots).

I'm a high handicapper and if I top a ball that barely goes 20-60 yards, or slice something so badly to the right it's a off the right side of the next fairway over, I'll quickly re-tee because hitting second shot from the angled side of another tee box isn't the best for fun or quick play (or facing wrong direction on neighboring fairway).

If he's taking 17 it seems like that's either a lot of really bad tee shots, which makes me wonder if the mulligans were better.

Got paired up a with a player the other day who took 17 mulligans. I am a 'no mulligan' kind of guy and don't take them ever, but generally I am not fussed what others do.

The player in question hit a very poor shot off the 1st tee, we start walking and he says "hold up I am taking a mulligan". I figure no big deal - a breakfast ball- not my style, but whatever. Problem was he took a mulligan nearly every hole. He was hitting bad shots, but not so bad he could not attempt to recover.

Normally I am not fussed about what other players do, but this did get annoying pretty fast. Even though I was not enjoying it, I kept my mouth shut as the other three of us were playing well (all low 70's) and playing fast so we had no pace issues.

"Shall we call the pro shop and have them bring you out a large bucket?"

Not good shots, but one you could play, like missing the green by 30 yards or being in light trees 20 yards off the fairway.

Our club is largely similar except you aren't it would be very unusual to see someone hit an extra ball off the first tee to loosen up (I have never seen such a thing).

This player was anomaly, newish member who rarely played. I suspect he did not have a handicap, and I know for certain he does not compete in events.

In my senior mens group the only time we take a second ball off the first tee is if the range was closed for maintenance.  We often need a second swing to loosen up.  The first ball is the one in play however.

Ok. I would play that.

The mulligans I take are if I hit out of bounds, very likely lost my ball, landed on the neighboring fairway, or I topped it and the ball rolled 22 yards.

No need to take mulligans for an OB, as you get to re-hit anyway (+2 strokes).

Actually as I don't how the guy was keeping score, maybe he took 17 stoke and distance penalties and not mulligans.
