We use the USGA recommendations, based on specific format.

For those of you that play in net/handicap leagues, do you use the players full handicap or a percentage?

Our club without real estate uses 100% of each member's playing handicap.  The USGA recommends 95% except when the field is less than 30 players.  We flight our tournaments with four flights of about 25 players and that is our rationale for using 100%.  As was mentioned, if one is competing in a format other than individua play, the recommended allowance may be less.

From the USGA Handicapping site:

C/1 – Impact of Field Size on Recommended Handicap Allowance

Field sizes have an impact on equity and should be considered when determining handicap allowances for a specific event and format of play.

The recommended handicap allowance for all individual stroke play formats of play is set at 95% for medium-sized field net events, of at least 30 players. For a field size of fewer than 30 players, the recommendation would be to increase the handicap allowance to 100%.

We use 100%, but we use a modified version of the World Handicap System.

We take the best 4 out of 6 differentials with Net Double Bogey ESC. We're a combo match play/stroke play league. 2-man teams, 9 holes. A vs A, B vs B for 2 pts per hole, 2 points for low net for each individual match, 4 pts for the team low net - total of 44 points possible.

We use full WHS handicaps.  Our "league" always plays some form of net game that is foursome against foursome.  If we have all foursomes, then we might play best two net, best three net, or '40' (where each group must use 40 hole scores, updated at the end of each hole, and tries to get as much under par as possible).  If we have a threesome amongst the foursomes, we play net Stableford - the foursomes use three net scores per hole while the threesome uses the best net score and second best net twice.

@rogolfHere is a suggestion for your three-somes vs. four-somes Stableford matches. Just count all balls and the winner is the team with the best score per player (divide total team scores by either 3 or 4). This is been very well received in our team competitions (where we also play full WHS handicaps).

Thanks, appreciate that.  However, we always try to have a game where one player's score in each group does not need to count for the group's score, ie, one player in each group can have a blowup hole that isn't detrimental to the group's score.  It's meant to be serious, but also fun and not embarrassing.  Now if two people blow up on the same hole...

@rogolf, I do understand that one (nobody wants to have to putt out for a 9 just to generate a valid team score). But for us the Stableford limits fix that one.

FWIW, another alternative is 2BB where (on a rotating basis) one player (in the 3some only) can count his score twice. That is reasonably fair and avoids the 'gotta finish the hole problem' for the most part. Played on a team once where "the doubler" got 2 strokes on a hole where he scored a natural par. That was nice.
