C Taper to Modus 3 - Thoughts?

Hey All,

Was fitted and been gaming the C Taper 130X for 1.5 years now, results have been great - tight dispersion, brought my ball flight down to a more penetrating trajectory, but starting to really despise the feel. When swinging at full power they're great, but whenever trying to hit something at 85% or days when I'm a bit tired, feels like hitting the ball with a steel pole and kills my hands the next day.

In the past week I've been to club champion and a Nippon shaft center and have hit plenty of different shafts. Have narrowed it down to the Modus 120X and the Modus 120TX. Really like the feel of both, would say the 120X feels smoother overall but a bit whippy and afraid that will accentuate misses.

Any thoughts or recommendations going from C Taper 130X to either the Modus 120X or 120TX? Anyone that's played both?

For context - hit the DG X100 (couldn't feel where the head was during the swing, felt it was lagging behind the shaft), Modus 125, and 130.

Trackman average #s with 6 iron: SS 95 mph, ball speed ~133, spin 5500-6000, carry 190, total 195. Aggressive transition. HCP 5

Thanks golfers!

Mike

I played C Taper 120S for several years and switched last fall.  I tried the 120x (never had a chance to try the 120tx) and didn't get along with it very well.  It seems it is a love/hate type of shaft.  I I was a good 1/2 to full club shorter in the Modus 120x using the same head as my C Tapers.

I went through a couple of fittings, including club champion, and came out with mixed results and recommendations.  I took the plunge and ordered Modus 125x in some Mizuno MB 20s last year and really like them.  At first, I was a little concerned going from 120g to 129g given that most fittings were putting me in 115-120g but as a long time DG S300/X100 player, they feel good.  Distance, spin and flight is also good.  If you like 130g shafts then I think the 125x is a good option.  At my last fitting my 6i swing speed was in the 92-93 range for reference.

My first thought would be why not look for something in the KBS line if you like the C-Taper 130X?

I faced the same issue with different shafts. I had played the DGX 100 for 20 years and they felt great, but I felt like I was swinging out of my shoes all the time to get the feedback and feel I was looking for. They did not give me the feedback with the 80% swing that I just flushed it . It felt like I had to go all out and just club down because 3/4 swing wasn’t cutting it...... lots of misses thin ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As it’s been said before, you either love the Modus 120, or don’t . I love the Modus 120, but I found a good deal on clubs that had XP 115 shafts.  True temper makes a couple of other light weight options that are like close relatives to the DG x100...... DG120.... DG105.....XP115. I’ve found the XP115 to give me the same feedback and DGX100 feel, with a lot less effort.  I’m 44 years old with lower back arthritis, but I still generate plenty of speed. The Mizuno shaft optimizer put me in project X 6.5 and C-taper 130. We are similar in numbers My 7-iron swing speed is 93-94 mph. I’m comfortable with the XP 115’s weight, numbers and feel. The familiarity and consistently is a confidence booster

like you said, the C-Taper 130 are great when you getting after it. Why not look at the KBS tour V or C- taper light? I think the Tour V 120 may be a bit more stiff tipped. If you are sensitive to feeling lag it in the shaft like you did with the DGX 100 then the tour V might be a better fit for you than the C-Taoer light, but still give you that KBS feel.

Such as I've digested the assorted threads over the years, I would think you might be a candidate for Super Peening Blue X.  I don't know that the profile matches up especially well with C Taper, but it's the first thing thing that came to mind.

I'm surprised you liked the 120, since it's kind of an exaggerated DG profile with a softer mid section.  This said with biases full in play, I'll admit.  🙂

If you really want to transition to the 120 from CTaper X, definitely don't go to the 120 X.  It profiles a full flex softer than the corresponding flex DG, to use DG as an example.  Modus 120 X is reasonably aligned with DGS in profile terms.

Some profile data below.  I don't have CTaper 130 in my data, but I do have the stiff, so I've included other stiff shafts for a comparison....  (not sure why I left PX in there, oh well)

edit:  I'd forgotten Super Peening Blue stiff, which I'll add here

I have been playing modus 120x. The shaft swings smooth and has a “kick” feel at impact. Overall I am happy with the shaft, but the shots have a high trajectory and low spin which make it challenging in windy days. It could be my swing, or could be the shaft. I will actually experiment other shafts to find one to bring my trajectory down a bit and make the shots more controllable.

Appreciate all the input - you guys definitely know your stuff and gave me a lot to think about.

As far as KBS, unfortunately wasn't able to hit the Tour V, but wasnt a fan of C-Taper Lite. Since playing and getting used to the weight of 130g shafts, the I've learned to appreciate the extra weight and the Lite maxing out at 115g in X didnt give that same feeling and stability I've got accustomed to holding the club.

After talking more with the fitter, and the above feedback on the 120 series playing softer through the mid, I think 120TX might be the ticket. The TX is 126g and more stable than the X, feels smoother than the c taper 130x, but still provides that Nippon buttery feel that I felt the first time I hit the 120 shaft. Pretty wild that the 120 is such a love/hate shaft.

Going to pull the trigger and taking them straight to a guys golf weekend. If it goes poorly, fitter will take them back and swap the c-tapers back in.

You will not be disappointed with the 120TX. By far the best shaft I have ever played. I've played all sorts of shafts in my irons, but nothing feels as good as the TX. Tried 120X, but just wanted a little heavier. TX is a different beast compared to the X. Best ball striking i have ever had and my dispersion is so tight. Been throwing darts all summer.

Have you tried TT dg x100 as well? How does it compare to tx120? I am playing modus 120x now and want something a bit heavier and provide lower trajectory.

I have played x100, c taper 130x, px 6.5 and 7.0, as well as 120x. For me, the 120TX has been the most consistent shaft I have ever played. It doesn't balloon like x100s did for me.
