Always liked those Channel Islands heads. Is that the old Cold Star finish??

I bought this secondhand, but yes, I do believe this is the the cold star finish. I’m pretty sure all the heads were made out of carbon, weighed between 345 and 355 grams (which checks out with the overall club weight of 526 grams and a 65 gram grip), and most were cold star plated or black oxide. Some were copper plated though, because I owned one of them a while back with a Rincon neck. I didn’t care for the Rincon neck so I sold it. I had been seeking out a plumbers neck model for quite some time and came across this one. The copper one I owned had the flat twilight face milling. This one also has this flat twilight milling, but it’s not quite as visible with the cold star finish.

What a beauty.

There was a thread on PT that profiled a (very) limited run of stainless CI heads, but yeah, most were definitely carbon.

Oh man. Stainless would be sweet. Any clue how many of those he made?

I checked this one when I got it with a magnet just to be sure. It’s definitely carbon. Haha.

Not sure...maybe 10 or so? I remember in the original Channel Islands thread Steve put out a call for stainless orders, then one build was profiled...and it was probably the most perfectly shaped #9 style CI I’ve ever seen. Those were the daaaaayyyyysss.

The CI line was a great set of putters, and the example above is awesome.  The plumbers necks are VERY few in number.  You've got a rare one!!

I went through a few CIs over the years and recently got homesick, so I traded for this one (below) about 3-4 months ago.  Enjoy!!

BTW, I’m pretty sure the finish is called “Cole Star”, not Cold Star....

Beauty of a piece there.

I thought this was direct from Byron, but I could be wrong. Maybe he messed up the spelling.

Woof, I'd be sending that back if it was my putter.

The view from the front is even worse.

It's a 1/4 shaft offset, which is pretty unusual for a plumber's neck.  The neck clearly had to be cut and relocated to satisfy that request.  Byron said it required "lots of filling" on the Instagram post.  He probably warned the customer it might not look clean.  Not sure I've ever seen 1/4 shaft offset with a plumber's neck.

Right I saw what he did and what he was after.  Just not byrons usual A1 clean work, I’d of preferred as a customer to have that neck totally blended into the head.  As long as the customers pleased who cares what anyone else thinks

I'm sure, it just may not have been possible to get the clean weld look given how far back on the head the neck had to go.

This is my DH89 GSS Long Pipe putter I ordered from Byron the summer of 2014 in Mayfield, OH during a golf outing we were both at.  The next week, as luck would have it, I was in southern California on business and I stopped by Byron's shop for a fitting.  A few weeks later Byron told me he had an Epic Day carbon steel putter, one of his last heads. I ordered that one to be set up like my DH89.  The Epic Day supplanted the DH89 as my everyday gamer but this one is not too far away.  Two things I would change with this putter is a rolled top line and softening of the bumpers (Tai effect).  Otherwise this one came out perfect.  For the minimalists out there, enjoy.  🙂

Funny, I'm having some lag time and non-communication trying to order a custom through TP Mills.  For whatever reason I think it's the norm for all these small 1-2 man shops to just be missing for a few days and have really horrible websites.

These one man shops are so hit and miss it’s crazy. Exact opposite here. Byron’s communication with me has always exceptional. Mills was impossible.

Yea I ordered a Byron years ago and it was smooth and the putter came out exactly how I spec'd it.   It's a lot to keep up with I'm sure.  Was discussing this in another thread - a small maker with 40-50 working orders on average spends 6 hours on the phone - and keeps up with emails, web inquiries, social media.  And that's before he even touches a club...

I have always been able to text or talk to Byron regarding every putter I have ordered.  He's not much to a long conversation, short and straight to the point, but communication has always been terrific.  I have always bought my putters directly from Byron.  When in doubt contact Byron directly.  He is rather busy but he will get back with you.
