WHS Player Identification

At present England Golf's handicap database system allocates an 8 digit personal identification code to each individual player. Each national authority in CONGU have similar but separate databases which also allocate IDs.

We are now told these IDs will disappear and a player's email address will be the key to a player's identification

 

I would be interested in knowing how other national authorities handled personal ID before switching to WHS and how email ID is working now.

 

Having been told at early presentations that IDs used by national authorities would continue with the addition of some form of national prefix, we are now told with a month to go that is not the situation.

In Australia, every player has a 10 digit number, first five identify the player's club, next five the club member number (normally first of those five numbers is zero). When you turn up at a different club, all they need is your 10 digit number for you to join their competitions. Clubs post the competition scores, individuals never do this personally.

My guess is the ID's won't disappear but rather will either remain in the background or a new ID will be assigned on the back-end. They need a non-changeable ID for each player for database tracking. It sounds like they are just trying to make it easier for players to remember their sign-in ID and they would need alternative ways for people to retrieve their account if they lose access to the email account for whatever reason.

It now seems that in order for all national WHS databases to communicate, the current IDs (eg 10 digit in Australia, 8 in England) will be prefixed with a national code. 

 

I gather that each country has its own WHS database but they are not yet connected to each other 🤯

Here in Canada we login with our email address but we also have a 10-digit membership number.

 

If we're comparing codes, the first two digits of mine are 52.

In the US we currently are assigned a GHIN number. Each golfer in the system has a unique one.

Effective in January we go to the email address system you speak of. Each player must have a unique email. So husband and wife cannot share one for email notifications.

It seems that in England we will be able to but get a security warning that it is already in use

Each of our clubs are numbered and naturally you have a membership number at your club, so your ID is in a xx-yyyy format. If you are a member of multiple clubs, you have as many IDs but only one of the clubs can be your "home club" that takes care of your handicap. If you switch clubs your ID will also change.

I am in USA but a member of a Scottish club(they move to WHS on November 1) I was told from that date I would have to send a picture of a signed card and then a member of my home club would then enter my score for WHS, I always thought I could do it myself - no word of a number or email to log in with.

The issue is that all the national WHS databases do not yet talk to each other. So away scores have to be advised to the home club if they are not in the same national authority area.
