Charleston Golf Trip-March '21

Looking at the possibility of planning a 3-4 day trip to Charleston area in early March of 2021 with a group consisting of roughly 10.   Would like to play one of the Kiawah courses but not sure if we should stay on the island for a night or two just to get a discounted rate for golf.  Currently just planning on getting an Airbnb in Charleston and playing golf 3 days.  Suggestions?

Lots of threads with good info if you use search.

I would add that the trip from Charleston to Kiawah isn’t exactly convenient. If playing at Kiawah, consider staying there and hitting Charleston on your arrival or departure day(s).  IMO any (of the 5) courses at Kiawah pretty much beat any other public course in the Charleston.  If you have private access, diff story.  honestly it’s Hard to Find good golf value in Charleston.  generally not very cheap for average conditions . Obviously budgets drive these kinds of trips so understandably multiple rounds at Kiawah may not be realistic.  If budget not an issue, consider just spending the entire trip at Kiawah.   My 2 cents

Resort courses in Kiawah are borderline not worth it. There are 2 private courses; cassique and river course that are wayyy better. Also Kiawah is not that far out of the way. PM me and I am happy to help.

Ocean Course is a "resort" course that is better than both Cassique and River course. The other 4 resort courses I agree with. Ocean course is constantly the highest rated course in South Carolina.

I grew up in Charleston and in my opinion I would try to play at least one of the Kiawah course as it's only 45 min. from downtown Charleston if you take the connector to James Island then follow the signs from there.

Also, Patriots Point is adjacent to the harbor and has some nice views, they have an old aircraft carrier there too. There are more courses on that side of town in Isle of Palms

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Rated highest is one thing, an enjoyable round is another. Don’t get me wrong, I think if you have the chance to play it- do.

A late 18 at the Muni is also fun. Course is terrible but a ton of history and a Charleston icon.

Haha I guess that's a fair assessment when the greens are bad. It's a very old course and short.  I grew up only a few miles from there. I'm pretty certain my uncle won the City championship back there in the 60's. I wish he had given me more lessons when I started playing, but I remember he played all his irons way back in his stance, the 3 iron was right in the middle. Maybe it was to keep it below the seaside winds that often rumble up who knows.

Good news for you both, the Muni has been closed for 9 months for a full renovation and is set to reopen the first week of December.   Not just new grass, the whole course has been redone with heavy influence from classic Seth Raynor/CB Macdonald templates. Each green completely rebuilt to USGS spec.  Mower fleet complete new as well.  The course is going to be something very special as far as muni’s go.

Every time I have played it has been an enjoyable round. And I have played in some crazy high winds.

KRT, HOT, PJ anyone play newly "Raynor" Renovated Muni?  looks fun from Maybank.

I have not played muni in probably 8 years. I had an awful experience the last time I played. 5.5 hour round and the dude I played with was a giant "a******" and played in jean shorts.

I definitely will give it another chance just to see the changes!

Yes, 3 times so far.  Play, you wont regret it.  Completely different golf course, not just new grass.  Greens roll very well, you need to think about how you approach greens.  Being out of position isnt a simple chip up anymore.  Greens are a lot of fun.  They spread tee time intervals out and so far pace of play has been fine.  Time will tell if that sticks.  Hope it does.

I played last Sunday. As it matures I believe it will come to be known as an upper-tier American municipal golf course. I had an absolute blast. I'd be thrilled to have it be my home course if I lived in Charleston.

Any updates on current conditions? Wild dunes. Dunes west, rivertowne, snee, natty, all in mtp side?

Not venturing over to KI this time...staying wild dunes.

And to OP don't miss out on Ocean Course...if you really want to play alot of golf, stay out there. If you want to party and have fun, stay in CHS, set up some tee times other places, play OC in the middle somewhere as a day trip. It's a walk only, so less boozy...lol.  you can still party pretty hard in Kiawah, but get a house or condo...stuff closes somewhat early.

Played the Muni 2 times in the past few weeks. I'd recommend playing after 3pm - it's $15 and I think it'll be hard to find a better deal in the area (or anywhere in the golf world.) Never played it before re-do but heard it was a swamp after any rain. It's still soggy but is playable. I think the course has great variety and is quite challenging. The re-do adopted many of Raynor's "template" style holes and it has good variety. The only thing I'd critique about the greens is that they're too small for the huge contours associated with the template holes. Also agree with those above about long waits / round times, so I'd wait until 3pm for sure.
