Over the history of Professional Golf have any of the great putters been tall?

Good call on Ernie, he’s a legit 6’3 and could really roll.

Only like 4% of American men are legit 6’2 or more. Tiger is more like 6’ even.

Agree. Tiger is 6-0 with spikes on.  Checkout his club specs if you don’t think so.  He plays basically old standard length wedges up.  If he were 6-1 then add spikes he’d need arms like an orangutan or so much hip bend hed look like Keegan Bradley to play wedges that short.

I can’t see how being tall relates to skill in putting. Putting is about vision, tempo, feel, and coordination.

Being tall makes it harder. You’re much farther from the ball and you have arms measurable longer to allow for more flip - or variables.   You’ll see a lot of younger talll players putt from a very stooped over stance to compensate for this  disconnect to the ball .  But as you get older the back won’t allow this as much.

Yah, I shoulda talked to my father about it before I posted this as he played with Sutton, my dad's 6' and he said that Sutton MIGHT be 6'1", lol

Thanks for the correction👊

This Blade, is my hunch and the reason I started this. Oddly enough I was watching Nelly Korda in LPGA event yesterday and she recently went LL. She's long, lean and she struggles with the putter. So does Lexi who is pretty tall as well. Got me to thinking about the men's tour and if it was similar. Long and lean just seems like it would make putting more difficult for all the reasons you stated

Doesn’t work.  Bending the knees puts  more strain on the back.  It creates this tense area from upper thigh through your butt and  into lower back.  Wider stance will lower you a tad. But it’s not as much as you’d think.  1-2 inches maybe.

Oh it makes a difference.  Also does with full swing and clubs.  It changes swingweight , total static weight.  Takes you eyes away from the ball and line , and the longer the lever , the more slop in it so to speak.

tall folks don’t have extra visual capabilities.    If you’re short ( say 5-6 to 5-9 ish. ) Get two steps up on step ladder and look down at a golf ball. Does it look easier to control or strike form up there ?  Nope.

I tried going with a longer 38" CB putter this summer due to 3 bad discs. It's more comfortable, but my eyes would way inside where they need to be for me. I putt best with a 33", but it's brutal if you're having a tight back day. I'm 6', longer torso than legs. A 6'5" guy and me sitting in a chair look the same height!

By this logic, I'm surprised Rory isn't a great putter.

Maybe there's a small link but I'd bet other factors are more important.

Also surprised people have Phil as a great putter.  He's a great player and won a ton (can't win this much being a bad putter).  But if Phil had 1/2 of Tiger's conversion rate on 3-6 footers in majors on Sunday he'd probably be pushing 10 wins in these events.

I would consider Phil streaky.  He was very good at times, and hard to watch others.  He was hot more often than a lot of other pros, but certainly not as consistent as Tiger.  I'll tell ya this though, he made more big putts under pressure than Faxon or some of the other greats.

I have always felt Phil had a good stroke, but was not always a great reader of greens.  He seemed to especially struggle reading shorter putts.

No.  We didn’t say that short equals better.  Just that tall equals challenges especially in aging with a short putter .  Think of it this way. If Rory were 6ft 5 , he maybe so bad at putting he’d be a teacher not a player.

Same here. But opposite body type.    I play 34.5 . I’m 6ft3 with long legs.  I’ll grip down to 33 or less on most short putts.  And play it full length for long lags where speed is more important than line.   But it’s a challenge to practice a ton.  With long legs I have to bend quite a bit from the waist.  Since  you can’t really shorten your legs.

Jack was avg height but his putting stroke was so cool...

especially early in his career, jack said he and grout wanted him to feel like he had a line on the putt like a billiards stroke...

Not really on topic...Seve, probably one of the greatest putters ever, was just above average height (1.83m) but used to crouch down very low:
