Hopefully, a MacGregor expert will chime in, but my first thought is the original 8 iron was replaced with one from a later production run. Other than stamping, it may be identical to the original.

I think you're right. The serial number on the ferrule appears to be different as well.

I've read--probably on the Classics Forum--that the Tour Forged stamping was included on the first year of production, but not always after that.

Yesterday I went to the golf course and tried these beauties. I won´t lie, my putter did not work (3 putt, 3 putt, 3 putt). But birdie opportunities in 10, 11 12 15 and 16. Even thoungh i still need to change the grips (i paid them 50 dollars while the clubs were just 25), my head is configured for blades. Love the way they look, and the feeling of impact is just another sport.

My WITB, G15 ping driver; cobra f8 3-4 fairway wood; Ping anser 2 putter; Cleveland reg 588 56°; Muirfield 3-pw

That's a solid bag of tools right there, and you can't go wrong with Muirfields.  They show up in every "Top 10 blades of all time" list I've ever seen.

Lots of us here play classic or vintage irons with modern woods as our regular setup and take "wood" woods out for fun and nostalgia.  Now you just need to pick up a set of these!

Yep see my signature. It was either Scooter or Fellaheem that coined the phrase of "a bag for all seasons". You will find as myself and others have found that if you can hit the persimmon woods fairly well then the modern metals are a no brainer.

Thanks.  Those are my "gamers" as they say in the fancy new stuff forums.  They are a bit beat-up but solid and they came with S300's which work pretty good for me.  I see I forgot to show the 4-wood...

These are original, not remakes.  Yes, definitely a little excessive on the poly spray.  Overall these are really nice.  Nice set!  I know this is a departure from the OPs irons but .....

This is my set of 693s (Dave Wood restorations)

Thanks!  Dave doesn't take as many clients as he once did and I am fortunate that I am a client he will take in.  Dave is also not the most inexpensive restoration craftsman there is so anyone who wants a bargain look elsewhere.  That said, he is the best of the best and his results prove it.  More than a person who restores clubs, Dave is my friend.  He will get all the business from me as he wants.

Beautiful Persimmon instruments. Thank you for sharing those photo's.

I wish I wasn't left handed so I could find and play one of those "golden era" beauties. Right now, I am playing a Penna re-shafted with a modern Dynamic Gold S400. It's a superb golf club, and I enjoy it very much, but the golfing heart wants what the golfing heart wants.

Would you happen to know if Dave has any left handed drivers he'd be willing to sell? A Wood Brothers' driver has been my holy grail for quite some time. My apologies for the crass, off-topic inquiry, but I am hoping I might grab the attention of some of my soulful brethren in this part of the forum.

I don't know what Dave has in his collection and whether he would sell any piece of it.  You can always send him an email at [email protected].  He may take a few days to reply but he will eventually.  In my opinion, Wood Brother woods were the best woods to be made since the golden era of persimmon in the early to mid 50s, bar none.  I have only one WB Texan and it is a made for tour block that was made for Gene Sauers.  Also, be on the lookout for a MacGregor M80W.  These are pretty rare but this this the left handed version of a M85W.  Occasionally left handed MacGregors come up.  I recently saw a set of left handed 653 woods (IIRC).  Best of luck.

Excellent info. Thank you very much. And thank you for Dave's email. I've done my best to read up on his work here and elsewhere; he is a true artist. It would be great to exchange a few emails with him.

I currently have a black MacGregor driver with a key-hole insert. I think it might be a DX2W or M2W, or the left handed equivalent. I also have the Cleveland Classic persimmon driver that, I think, was a tribute to the golden era Mac's. Hitting those drivers makes one really want to experience the original real deal.

From what I have seen of his work he is the best. If I was into pristine and rare collectables like you are he would be the only one doing my restoration work

The Muirfield line of irons are terrific irons.  I have had a set of Muirfield irons as well as two sets of Muirfield 20th irons (my first set was my primary gamers from 1989 through 1991).  I got a set of 1991 MacGregor VIP remakes which were essentially a Muirfield grind which were an evolution of the old VIP grind.  I hope you play these well!!!

Bogey Bomber, I note the inclusion of Spalding Synchro Dyned and Top Flite in your list. Don't suppose either are the set pictured but have you any thoughts on the year of these?

No sorry i have never seen them before... interesting!

I'm pretty familiar with each Spalding release from 1950-1980 and i haven't seen them, yeah now i wonder snd want to know more about them. I hope you find out soon when they are from, i'll let you know if i find anything with my researches!

Thanks Bogey Bomber, all help gratefully received!

I am in the UK which may be a factor - export model or made here under license? The shape of the head, length of hosel make me think '50's....?
