Please recommend a 16.5* or 17* compact 4 wood that is easy to hit.

Depends on what you mean by forgiveness. If you want ease-of-launch look towards Ping. I believe their 5w models tend to be about 17.5^o and all of their fairways are shallow. If you prefer something with a deeper face that you can trap, head in the opposite direction. Not sure who makes the best deep-face model. I just picked up a 16.5^o TS2 and it's fairly deep. It was on sale at PGA Superstore for $125 on the used rack (virtually brand new). If you like stability, I think TaylorMade is probably atop the heap of the major brands. You can hit most any TaylorMade fairway quite poorly and get some remarkably decent-looking shots relative to the strike.

I had a number of 3/4 woods over the years and would say the easiest to hit LONG is Tour Edge Exotic XCG, 4 wood, 16.5*.  Just wish it had an adjustable sleeve on it.   May have to have one installed.

I love mine... Bomber off the tee and very serviceable off the deck.  

 

Cutting down the shaft was HUGE for me though. 43.75 is just too long. 42.5" is much much more manageable and a big reason why it works so well for me.

Would tend to agree. Great off the tee, not the easiest to hit off the fairway since my swing is pretty shallow and it has a very deep face. I tried it with some success, then tried an M5 5w as well, then found the 16.5* TS2 and its much easier off the deck and really really good off the tee.

I will third this.   Purchased used G400 5w in July.  Intended to play up 1* at 18.5.  Was hitting nearly as far and w/ much better dispersion than TM M2 3w.   Immediately ditched 3w and dialed G400 down to 16.5 and solely play it as a 4w.  Saved me a club in the bag to use elsewhere.

Agreeing with some above posters - try the Ping G400 5w lofted down a degree....Rogue 4 wood or Epic Flash 5w lofted down a degree.

I wouldn’t call the EXS compact

 

you need to look at CBX 119 for a compact wood

 

Early CB series tour edge are compact but not so easy to hit

 

more of a workable club

 

you could look for a ex9 tour for a compact somewhat forgiving club

Just to make you more confused. Old Mizuno ST180 5 wood set to 17 deg is a beast! Stock tensei shaft is easy to launch and it’s just easy to get off the fairway with the low head. Just be careful about teeing too high if using a tee at all.

Big fan of the Cobra F9 5 wood, I have mine turned down to 17 and it's great. Very easy to hit from the tee and from the deck. Draw biased for sure, but a strip of lead tape seems to have toned that down quite a bit
