Water Hazard-Drop where?

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang super quick question, my googling sucks It seems cant find a clear answer, youtube etc not giving me the clear answer either. Also argued with a bunch of buddies. Im so confused.

Where do I drop.  To drop where I first crossed the water or where I last crossed the water?

I hit a block right off the tee,  was behind the hazard,  Was not paying attention to the wind coming from the left, I hit towards the middle of the fairway but the ball began to fade into the water.

Do I drop well back where I first crossed the water, Or do I drop where the ball last crossed the water?

Thanks

Looks like it should be marked red, as I presume the green you're going to is in the bottom right of the picture (only a bit of it visible).  Probably the best option is lateral relief - drop within two club-lengths of where it last crossed the edge of the penalty area and no closer to the hole - one stroke penalty.

It's last crossed the margin. In some cases you can clear the water but if the stakes/line are above the water and your ball doesn't clear the stakes/line you have to go backwards

Did you at any stage consult the Rules of Golf? After all, it is said very clearly and several times in Rule 17.1d (Penalty Areas):

'...through the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area:...'

There is a handy application for the Rules of Golf, I can recommend that.

Added more notes to clarify,

1) Left side is the teebox and I was hitting a 4 iron from the right side Over the water.

2)Right side is the green . (Correct)

3) The Hazards were clearly marked with "Red Stakes"

@Newby Hey thanks for responding!  So 3 choice? I would truly appreciate the details!

@rogolf Hey Thanks!  To confirm again I would be able to dop at the last point or the point "closer" to the green because that was the "last point" it crossed?

To be fair if I did not HIT it left towards the middle of the fairway and not just blocking it straight over the water.

I would assume of course I would  have to take a drop where I originally hit  from if I did NOT? exit the hazard at anytime.

@SNIPERBBB  I re did the drawing, showing the markings, I am personally 100% sure, my ball started to the middle of the fairway and then fade into the water.  I was not paying attention to the strong crosswind, that was my fault, BUT I likely had cut spin as well that caused the ball to fade as hard as it did.  To be clear as long as I came back into the fairway, crossed the red stakes line, I was NOT supposed to drop where I first crossed or basically where I took my original shot from.

I was concerned that I was cheating dropping closer to the green as that was the "Last" point of entry.  But from the sound of it I was in my right to drop because I knew it came cleary into play and then back out further up.

@Mr. Bean Hey!  Sorry as I mentioned, I tried to google and I tried to look for videos and my 2 buddies (potential bias as one was on my team and one was not LOL)  But we could NOT come to a consensus.  Hence the reason I am posting here in the specific section of GolfWRX.

In regards to your point, "...through the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area:...", As you posted "Original ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area.  The ball passed through the Penalty area twice,  Once nearest me, and once furthest me (my opinion and gentlemen like honesty).  Ultimately ending in the same penalty area.  I understand the words, but if I take the words literal, and partially the biggest argument with my 2 buddies while we were playing.  That I had to ensure that the ball did in fact come out of the 1st crossing and re enter the second crossing based on the curvature of the shot.

Half of the argument was them debating if I came into the fairway and then back out,  But I just wanted to make sure that since I did end up in the same hazard ultimately, I was not supposed to drop from the initial entry.

Thanks again all, I think the answer is clear,  "LAST" crossed the edge of the penalty area.

Fairway has nothing to do with it.

1) Stroke and distance.

2) Back on the line (behind the point where it last crossed keeping that spot between you and the flag)

3) Lateral relief. Drop in the Relief Area outside the Penalty Area (NOT "Water Hazzard") where it LAST crossed the margin of the PA.

4) If the Local Rule is in effect you may be able to drop on the opposite side of the PA.
