Hitting behind the golf ball

Recommended Posts

Spoiler

Recently got my first set of clubs. Have played pitch and putt and gone driving range all my life. 24 now. Started hitting off the grass instead of mats and can’t stop hitting behind the ball. Just chunking it and ball goes about 5 yards in front of me. Have tried to focus on ball position and staying stable on backswing(not swaying). Hasn’t helped so far. Also tried a couple of drills focusing in front of the ball which haven’t helped either. Also to note I always held a club incorrectly, tightly with a big gap between both hands. Since I got my new clubs I’ve adjusted to holding it correctly and found it most comfortable linking fingers. Any tips or help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Not a teaching pro or anything, lol, but I see a few things. 1) You really start folding your arms pretty quickly. Try to keep your arms straighter longer on back swing. When you try to unfold those arms on down swing, your bottom-of-swing point can change drastically. Less folding should give more consistent bottom. 2) Looks like you are hitting wedge. Don't be afraid to move it back another inch in your stance, especially if you hit it fat often. Overall, your swing looks a little quick on tack back and swing. Try to slow it down a bit.

I used to be a bogie golfer, always hitting fat. I simply moved the ball back a bit, and that started my march to becoming single digit.

It should be said, however, that overall, your swing looks darn good for not playing much on course/grass.

First off thanks very much for the reply, my first time jumping on here haha.

I will definitely take these tips and keep them in mind next time I’m down the range. I think you are spot on, I’m probably chopping down into it a bit much and definitely need to keep the arms straighter.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

I've been playing for a couple of years and have gotten down to 11 so not an expert but new enough to the game to remember clearly what it was like starting out (lots of fat shots) and what really helped me improve. A few things:

1)Your swing could do with being wider. A thought that works for me is get the lead hand as far away from my body in the backswing as possible.

2) Your right thumb is right on top of the shaft and pointing right down the shaft...You'd have more control over the club if the right thumb was pointing more down and across towards your lead foot.

3) in my experience fat shots occur because I don't shift pressure from the trail side to lead side at top of backswing. Looking at your swing you shift into the trail heel but your toes raise off the ground which buggers your balance up... Further, down by impact your trail toes are still slightly elevated which illustrates that you haven't shifted pressure sufficiently back to the lead side (result being heavy contact). It's counter intuitive but what fixed me in range sessions was putting the ball really far forward in my stance but setting up as if the ball was in middle of my Stance. If you take your normal swing you'll miss the ball as it's so far forward.. But instinctively your body won't want to miss the ball and so the only way you're going to hit it is by shifting all that pressure to the lead side. It'll be terrible to begin with and your contact will be shocking but persevere and Im sure that drill will help you immensely.

Please let us know how you get on!

Couple things, your top hand grip looks like you're palming it instead of having it in your fingers (you end up fixing that about halfway through the video you posted). Second is what @YouDaHamHider pointed out in 3. You don't seem to get your weight back through the swing. When I feel like I'm starting to fat/chunk everything I do a drill where I'll place the ball slightly further back (just in front of your back knee) and then try to make a 3/4 swing standing only on my front leg. As I feel my striking and balance coming back under control I'll creep the ball up to more towards the middle and put my back leg back on the ground.
